While that's horrible, apparently the hottest its gotten is 30 degrees celsius. Aka 86 degrees F°.

How the **** is such a low amount of heat killing so many people? Here in America we had heat waves of like 115°, and had nowhere near the deaths the UK has had.

Proves you are truely american 30 degrees here is 86 in america as we are metric if you didnt already know. Also due to england been a fairly wet country we get a very wet and sticky heat, much easier to become dehydrated compared to drier heats in other countries. Finally we are not used to it, our homes are built to be warm, we dont have air conditioning in our homes and work.

So for people to die its not uncommon here, its the same with snow we hardly get it so are never able to get used to it been around and it completly messes everything up.

I wonder what the roads are made of in hotter places, we had a couple of 35° days before and the asphalt melted like butter, it made a nice sound as wheels went over it and people had trouble crossing the street lol. The asphalt melts really easily here. Also, I had never even heard of cooling centers before lol.

A cooling center is a temporary air-conditioned public space set up by local authorities to deal with the health effects of a heat wave. Usually sited at several locations throughout a city, cooling centers are meant to prevent hyperthermia, especially among the elderly without air conditioning at home.

Cooling centers provide shade, water, and sometimes medical attention, along with referrals to social services, as many of the people who need assistance from these centers are homeless.

They are increasingly used in cities such as New York City, Chicago, Boston, and Toronto[1] as the danger of heat waves has risen in the public consciousness, or in places like Seattle where home air conditioning is rare but 90+ F (32 C) temperatures occur every summer, though typically do not last for more than a few days.

Another health measure sometimes taken during heat waves is to extend the hours of operation of public swimming pools

I think its the humidity too, atm its 86 F in VA and it feels unbearable ("Feels like 95"), it feels like you are choking if you go outside.
When the temp is high but the humidity is low, you just take out the sunglasses 8)

I'll admit humidity is rough. Here in the desert even like 30-40% humidity is unbearable. At 100+ degrees with that sort of humidity I'm not happy.

All the roads are made the same. Aggregates, a little sand and bitumen. What changes according to the temperature is the type of bitumen. Let's say you live in a cold environement, the bitumen used will be specially made for temperatures in a range of -40 to 34. If it gets closer to 34, the bitumen will start to liquify a little (like really hot rubber) making the asphalt softer. If you live in a hot climate, the bitumen will not be made to withstand temperatures like -40, it will instead be designed to withstand temperature in a range of -22 to 70. So if it gets really cold when hot-weather bitumen is used, the asphalt may crack due to the bitumen being too rigid, not being designed for cold weather. However, it will maintain it's rigidity in hot weather.

TL;DR. It's pretty much the same principle as winter and summer tires.

P.S. This is comming from a civil engineer specialised in roads :P

Our climate isn't good for bitumen then, in summer the roads melt, in winter they just disintegrate and when the snow melts the roads are filled with holes. :D

It ain't (y)our climate that's not good for bitumen, it's (y)our politicians that are too cheap to buy high quality products. :(

Most places of extreme heat don't suffer from high humidity.

Either way, 30c isn't hot by any stretch of the imagination. Humid or otherwise. It always surprises me how many Europeans die during 'heatwaves'.

Yeah, bastards don't ask enough money from the European Union. All of the newer roads have been done with EU money.
