Well the budget is the single most important factor to consider when building a pc.

You can make a $500 pc or a $1500 one.

Unless you have unlimited funding :P

That's a pretty nice build for that price though you can get equivalent RAM for much cheaper.

I would say definitely go for a custom build.

And I do agree that Dell is officially crap.

A budget is really needed though...
There´s a lot of people that cna help you with a nice build, suited for your budget.

If you can spend $1000 then obviously there´s gonna be a huge performance boost compared to a $550 setup, which can also be good enough, but then again that also depends on what you use it for. You should really try to describe that a bit more plus your budget :)

Ok here's two different setups. One cheap, but still really good, and one that maxes out your budget.

Budget Rig:

- ASRock G31M-S MicroATX board $44
- E5200 DualCore 2.5Ghz (EASY overclock to 3-3.3Ghz) $68
- XFX HD4870 1GB GPU $145
- OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2x4GB) $63
- Samsung Spinpoint F1 32MB cache 750GB Hard drive $65
- Rosewill Green Series RG630-2 630W PSU 4 12V rails, 20A each $55
- Pioneer DVD/CD Burner SATA $30
- Generic Black Rosewill MidTower $40
- OS, Err... people pay for OS's?

Total: $510

Higher End:
- i7 920 $280
- GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Mobo $188
- SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5850 1GB $259
- G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM(PC3 10666)$109
- Samsung Spinpoint F1 32MB cache 750GB Hard drive $65
- Rosewill Green Series RG630-2 630W PSU 4 12V rails, 20A each $55
- Pioneer DVD/CD Burner SATA $30
- Generic Black Rosewill MidTower $40

Total: $1038 (Badass setup)

I don't deal with AMD.

Now that's a setup right there. Basically go for that, don't change a thing, and have a kickass machine for the next 2 years.

All in CAD, the shipping kills the deal to be honest but if you can find a deal which offers free shipping you're set. I got 8gb ddr2 800 for 44$ around christmas.

Tigerdirect.ca
Newegg.ca
NCIX.com

Just a few places to search around.

there is no reason at all to go i7 920 with the release of the i5 750, performance wise they mirror each other but the i5 runs cooler ( meaning is easier to oc ) and uses less power. so unless you work (like seriously) with media i5 750 is the way to go, use the saved 200 bucks on a gpu upgrade or simply keep it in your pocket.
