You do not become intelligent overnight. It's something that you have to work on. Intelligence is not something you are born with. There are many factors that affect intelligence and one of them which is at the top of the list is the environment in which you are in.
By the way, I wouldn't say that intelligence is related to genetics. Just because there is a strong positive correlation between parents being smart and their children being smart that doesn't mean that it's related to their genes. Correlation does not prove causation. Furthermore, there could be a third factor which isn't being considered, such as diet, economic class and other lifestyle variables. Although I could go on and on about why genetics isn't related to intelligence, I think I will stop here.
