Computer help

Post by Rainigul »

Yo, I got two questions, my friend's building a computer and it got me into thinking I wanna build my own as well, however, my parents are cheapasses so the best I can hope for is to upgrade my current computer :D.
Anyways, I have a Presario F700 notebook, it's the best computer I've ever owned and I like it alot, however, there are three aspects of it I'd like to upgrade, two more important than others.

First, is ram. I'm pretty sure my computer can handle two Crucial (brand name) 1 GB DDR-2 PC2-4200 RAM, for it has two ram slots and I'm pretty sure the max each can hold is 1GB so this works out perfectly, however, I have a question:
First, what is the pin count of a Presario F700 notebook? I haven't actually opened it up yet, so it might actually tell me, but if anyone could answer that it'd be great.

Second, is graphics card. This is the aspect of the computer I least understand. This computer has the best graphics card I've ever owned, but it's still not that great. I mean, it can run any of the games I've ever put into it, but I've used better computers, my GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce 7000M/nForce 610M.
So my question is, where the hell does the graphics card go? lol. I don't know where it's located in the computer, maybe when I pop my computer open I'll see it, but for my current understanding of computers, I have no idea where it goes. Also, what is a better GPU, and is it relatively cheap (also, I like NVIDIA, so let's try and keep it in the NVIDIA family ;))

Third, is the harddrive, I have almost no questions about it, except is it possible to dual link two harddrives? I have an older computer with... I what size harddrive it is, but if it's easily done (or possible), I'd like to link the two harddrives together to function as one (assuming the other HDD is compatable with my motherboard)

Yup, that's it, thanks for your help.

1. Upgrading Laptops is difficult if not most impossible, but more so impractical.
2. Ram/hard drive is probably the only thing you'll be able to change along with perhaps the disc drive.
3. Crucial, is expensive.

Find the exact model number (will be on the bottom of your laptop), and post it here. Will help me help you :)

Just to add.
- Upgrading the CPU/GPU would be impractical, and very technically difficult. There are external USB graphics cards, but are very expensive and it would be cheaper to buy a desktop/better laptop.
- Hard drives will only be able to be 'swapped', so find another 2.5inch drive and take out your older one. You won't be able to add another.
- Ram, just about the only thing on a laptop thats easy to install :P

I know laptop upgrades are hard, but I'm sure I can upgrade ram because all ram chips are the same size (well, of the same pin count). Crucial isn't that expensive, I can buy the ones I mentioned for 30 bucks and their first tier RAM makers, and 30 bucks is nice considering it's more than doubling my current ram.

Yeah, I imagine GPU changing will be hard (especially since I know nothing about it)

And I'm not concerned yet with replacing my harddrive, but I'd like to know what the fucks using up all my space, when I first got this comp, I had like 75 gigs free memory, now I have less than 23 gigs free.

You can upgrade the video on some laptops, but there's really no point because you'll run into a bottleneck with the processor. As for the pins, a quick Google tells me the F700 should be 200-pin DDR2. Make absolutely sure you buy DDR2, because it isn't backwards compatible with DDR.

As for the space issue, try this:

Ahh, thanks for the pin count Cruor, and I'm checking out your link right now too :)

Oh yeah, I also just downloaded CCleaner (one of the best programs of all time, I can't believe I forgot to download it when I got this computer)
Check out the results, and all it does is delete useless files:

Still recommend getting the exact model number as the F700 doesn't sound like an exact model number I might be right.
Example, my general model number is Presario dv2700, but my actual model number is dv2890nr.

As I said, its on the bottom. Post it here :)

On the bottom it just says: Product: Presario F700

As well as serial number and stuff.

So I'm pretty sure I just got the plain ol' Presario F700, but I can see why you would think I might have a different one because I think there are F750's and others as well.

Also, how ironic, I mention F750's, and mine just happens to be an F750US.

I'd get on xfire but I don't have it installed, plus you're probably not there :D but I'll install it for later.

Theres your important information. So to be honest I think you'd be best off buying a 2gig stick and a 1 gig stick as it appears your have 2 ram slots.

Part Description Price ea.
CT785218 1GB, 200-pin SODIMM $ 15.99
CT785224 2GB, 200-pin SODIM $ 27.99
Subtotal $ 43.98

That's off crucial.

Best of luck.

Well since i know your laptop rather well, i suggest you get the ram upgrades as it desperately needs it.
Apart from that im not sure if you can upgrade too much else. Like i said in that email, probably just best to scratch build a new computer if your looking for something better then your laptop.

I always wanted a gaming laptop, because you can carry your games around.

But after so much research I've decided laptops are not for gaming, the parts are expensive and most of them arn't for hardware upgrade (although I did add ram to my notebook). Its best to just save up and buy a desktop

I beg to differ. My laptop can play games just fine. Cost me 900$ in the summer.

Lol yeah, my computer's a slowass. It's still the fastest I've ever had though believe it or not.
I'd like to build one from scratch, but my parents probably won't let me blow all that money at once, so I was gonna just upgrade this computer and then when I get enough money, I'd take the parts out of this computer and just use them.

@soda
It says max is 3000 or whatever, but I believe each slot is only "compatable" with 1G ram sticks, I think I could put 2G's in, but... Well, I'm not sure what will happen. If anybody knows, tell please.

Also, laptops really aren't for gaming, but if you have a good one (though expensive) it'll play games fine.

Well, this weekend I might go out and get some chips, where the hell can I buy any though? Does anyone know? I don't think besbuy sells them and that's pretty much the only electronics store I know of that I live around.

To be honest. As the ones you are ordering aren't particularly expensive I'd get them off Crucial, just so you know they are compatible.

I highly doubt each slot is limited at 1gb as, then it would be impossible to achieve the maximum 3 gigs. 2x1=2. The worst that can happen is that you'll get a 2 gig stick and it will only read 1 gig from it.

So maybe perhaps your 'cheapest' option, would be to buy a 2gig stick, take out one of your older 512 sticks, and you'll have 2.5.

Buying from best buy, will be expensive, I'm sure you could find the ones recomended to you by crucial elsewhere for cheaper on the interweb, but be careful, as I tried to do just that and ended up with one that wasn't compatible even though absolutely everything about it was the same as that on crucial. Turns out it was a high density module, or something, can't remember.

Nice, that's not too shabby :)
Mine used to be 4.1, but has dropped for some weird reason. But I see it as a 4.5 as who the hell how well aero runs if it runs smoothly?

I'm looking at upgrading my hard drive to a 320gb 7200rpm once I get my remaining holiday pay from my old job, should be 200 pounds are so and the hard drive is about 67pounds so I figure I deserve a treat xD

I think it's strange that your normal graphics are worse than your gaming graphics soda, that really makes no sense, your computer is like "Yeah, I can run 3 copies of half life 2 all at once and have silkroad running in the background, but when I have to display windows aero... I just get so nervous I can't do it!"

I'm glad that my computer is stacking up pretty good to both of yours (and holy crap, my ram is better now! :D) I wish I had a better GPU though, then this computer would be awesomeeeee.
