Post by cuchulainn »

Built my first custom PC today. Got everything situated right and...

IT DIDN'T BOOT!!!!

Couple hours later and I'm getting the RAM ready to send back :(

So sad, was excited to see what my baby could do.

1. Everything is wired up correctly (I took 2.5 hours to put it all together and as I went I wsa double and triple checking my connections). The little LED and power button leads are a bitch to connect, but they are all connected correctly

2. I know that, but to install windows, the BIOS needs to boot.

3. I'm not a dumbass.

4. Yes, all the components were matched when I picked them out (ie, the mobo takes DDR2 800 RAM but can be OCed to DDR2 1066, but I bought DDR2 800 RAM)

Every time I booted up, I got 3 beeps and no video. The possible BIOS for my mobo are AMI, Award or Phoenix. Mine (and another friend's conclusions) was that based on the beep code (3 beeps of the same tone), it was AMI since it didn't match Award codes and the Phoenix ones are much more complicated. 3 beeps = base 64k RAM failure. I tested each stick separately in every slot to no avail. RMAing the RAM today, hopefully will have new sticks early next week.

Thats what you get for buying cheap ram or you might of shorted out the ram with static.

RAM was 43 bucks for 2 GB. Brand is OCZ. Prolly should've gone with Corsair or Crucial, but the rebate on the OCZ put those over the top. Oh well. Pretty sure I didn't screw them up with static (was using wristband and handling everything by the edges most of the time). Couple of other people on Newegg said they had to RMA as well, but once they got working sticks, everything worked fine. Guess I just got unlucky.

EDIT: Maybe I should just spring for some Corsair or Patriot RAM today and I'll get it sooner than it'll take to RMA my other RAM. Then if the second set of OCZ doesn't work, I'll just go for refund, if it does, then I have 4 GB of RAM.

EDIT2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227139
That's the OCZ RAM I've got.

Yea just cheap stuff 2gb is good to go for.
4gb is only good for high end games. not like you really need that much for low end stuff. 2gb is plenty for photoshop, sro And stuff.

cant wait to get my new machine which im ordering when i get paid.
what other parts did you order?

LOL.

I'm a college student, I NEVER have 1k in bank.

In case of emergency, I can always talk to parents, but I usually just avoid emergencies instead.

(we restarted it 4 times :x )
