Re: Lightning does not always create thunder?
Forest and trees, friend. Forest and trees. Sound is vibrations through media (air) interpreted by our ears and brain. Lightning (no matter if it is twice the temp of the sun or not) is HOT. As it strikes the air vibrations are created. The "path" it takes is as the above poster explained. Air is displaced as lightning travels and this causes vibrations (shock waves).Wikipedia wrote:Lightning heats nearby air to about 10,000 °C (18,000 °F) nearly instantly, which is almost twice the temperature of the Sun’s surface. The heating creates a shock wave that is heard as thunder.
General Rule about wikipedia: Do NOT trust it under any circumstance as any1 can edit it at any time.
and now ill refute its point: ...
Heat is also involved. The heat of the lightning is the cause of rapid expansion of the surrounding air. Again, more vibrations. Lightning travels through the plasma path in the air (the path of least resistance) and produces the thunder we hear.
- Okay, random science fun: Lift your right foot a few inches from the floor and then begin to move it in a clockwise direction. "Draw" several clockwise circles in the air. While you're doing this, use your finger (your right index finger) to draw a number 6 in the air. Your foot will be interrupted and begin to turn in an anticlockwise direction and there's nothing you can do about it!
Back to Lightning: distance to a flash can be guesstimated by measuring the time delay between the flash of light and the thunder —the formula is ~3 secs for each kilometre (or ~5 secs for each mile). Thunder is seldom heard at distances greater than about 12 miles. Oh... and there are different 'steps' to a lightning strike. The 'return' stroke is the loudest.

I should have made 'weird science' thread maybe?
I wanna, been trying.
- Can do:
- finger clockwise and other finger anti-clockwise
- rub head pat belly switching,
- can't do foot circle 6...
Right side body controlled by left side brain - you sure you can do it? (lol)
We talk lightning more if ya wanna.
