Lightning does not always create thunder?

Forest and trees, friend. Forest and trees. Sound is vibrations through media (air) interpreted by our ears and brain. Lightning (no matter if it is twice the temp of the sun or not) is HOT. As it strikes the air vibrations are created. The "path" it takes is as the above poster explained. Air is displaced as lightning travels and this causes vibrations (shock waves).

Heat is also involved. The heat of the lightning is the cause of rapid expansion of the surrounding air. Again, more vibrations. Lightning travels through the plasma path in the air (the path of least resistance) and produces the thunder we hear.
