ok taxes are a bit higher than in the states, but higher education and healthcare is basically free compared to america.

oh and I would have gotten a michigan grant where they pay every michigan college student $2000 but thanks to the morons who run the state, that grant is gone. And guess what, its called the "michigan promise scholarship". lol

Now I'm scared of college =( Where I live you get like 400$ if your average is 80%+ in gr.10,you get even more in gr.11 and gr.12.

I know my dad is saving up money for when I go to College, but he has 4 kids, has to be pretty damn expansive :banghead:

I'll get a student loan (interest free) for all my rent / tuition fees, something like £8000 a year. And i'm trying to save some money for the social life now.. working 25 hours a week but not managing to save that much... hoping parents will help me out a fair bit there.

First 2 years I've been doing alright, I guess I'mma have to start listening in class, don't wanna end up with a blue collar job.

What is FAFSA? And what states do they apply to?

Edit: Oh Financial aid, about how much do they give to help you out?

Whats wrong with blue collar? considering everyones trying to get a "white collared" job the blue collar ones are in more demand and wages are going up, aka trades, like from tech school. not blue collar mcdonalds drive thru order taker.

There are millions of dollars that are not given away every year from scholarships because not a lot of students apply for them.

Signed up to fastweb on my junior year high school and ever since then, it's the only place I browse for scholarships:

If you lived in the 60s and 70s your logic would have worked. Blue collared jobs in the 21st century are not "in demand". Thats why they are blue collar for a reason, because almost anyone can do it.

And most trade schools or tech schools (most especially the ones you see on TV ads and website ads) are just trying to make money off you. They won't get you anywhere. Again, a person's best bet for financial stability is a bachelors degree in a GOOD major. Not english, psychology, or asian studies. Those don't count.

you are so far out of touch its unbelievable. They are called skilled trades for a reason and alot of people start them thinking oh anyone can do a trade then quit realizing its not what they think. Economy is bad right now, my company is the busiest it has been in years. I think your just lazy and could not do a skilled trade. And he is right skilled trades are in demand now more than ever with an aging population of them and all our parents being desk jockeys they are very in demand. And those "colleges" you see on tv are bullshit your right. But there is real colleges for real apprenticeships, youv'e obviously never looked into it. But who can blame you, you were probably born to be a desk jockey.

Well I'm scratching my head. I've never seen someone look down on white-collar jobs as "desk-jockeys". Believe me, contrary to what you think, jobs that come with bachelor degrees are not restricted to cubicle work, if you'd be smart enough to realize that there is work to be done outside the office.

Ask any government employment office, a high school counselor, or career advisor. 90% of them will tell you that a 4 year college degree is the best way to open yourself up to financial success and job stability. Sure, jobs like plumbing and aviation mechanic will stay. Well then, what about construction and auto? When the economy gets into its downcycle, your in trouble.

I find it very very ironic that your calling me lazy. Laziness is often exactly why many people drop out of college and high school to try to get a blue collar job because they don't want to put in the work necessary for a college degree (aka studying). That is, unless you truly enjoy being a mechanic, using your hands, etc.

And don't take my posts the wrong way, I never said that white collar jobs are the best and the greatest. They aren't immune to recessions either. The point is, more education generally means less chance of being cut or having the job shipped to china/india and the fact that blue collared jobs can be done by almost anyone, which doesn't make it an "in-demand" job opportunity.

Jstar nearly every Com. Sci. degree holder is losing their job because R&D is being moved to India.

^you know I actually believed that too? Today, the idea that computer jobs and outsourcing to india is so embedded in our heads, people believe that all computer jobs are going to foreign countries.

That actually isn't true, I talked to college advisors and looked at webistes like the BLS website and CNNMoney.com, etc. about job growth in computer related fields, and its in demand, contrary to public belief.

The fact is, most of the mindless low-level programming work is being shipped to india, not R&D. R&D is mostly here to stay.

My father works for Alcatel-Lucent, a telecommunications company. He had to change the area he worked in because people working in R&D were being laid off. 90% of R&D is in India now. A person fresh out of university with a degree in Com. Sci. might as well go back and get their MBA if they want to get a job quickly.

What I want to tell people coming with personal experiences is that we can't base anything off anecdotal evidence. Just because you see something happening to you and a few other people doesn't mean its like that everywhere.

Re: How are you paying for College?

In the early 2000s the Ottawa area was a booming tech spot because the Canadian dollar was so low in comparison to the American dollar. Our dollar has since risen and it is no longer feasible for companies to run their R&D through here. The cheapest way for them to do it is to outsource to India. The only R&D jobs left in Ottawa are those held by people with very high seniority. A student fresh out of university is not going to be able to become gainfully employed in a company when there are hundreds of people with more experience competing for that same job.

sure theres work to be done outside the office. But here in canada most.. alot of Skilled trades require grade 12 math some even science. So they aren't usually drop outs who are in the trades. May be different wherever your from but you don't go far dropping out of highschool these days. The drops out you see are the ones working at gas stations and doing jo-jobs. Not careers in the trades though.

You need Social Studies 30 & Gym 10 to get your HighSchool diploma in Canada. So as wootpops said you won't get really far with just your HighSchool diploma, even worse when you dont have one.

If that. I have a high school Diploma with 58 college credits, and it's still hard to obtain a job even at a gas station. People are demanding so much nowadays.

I'm sure people in skilled trades are setting themselves up for more sucess than high school dropouts, but that doesn't mean skilled trades has a bunch of job openings ready for everyone who doesn't go to college. I just couldn't believe that someone would say that "desk jockeys" are for lazy people..thanks for making my day.

Blindfire wrote:...

There are plenty of other jobs to be had besides R&D. There is maintenence, cybersecurity, etc. Computer science is way more than writing code. Thats called computer programming, which happens to be an extremely poor career choice.

And I didn't know you were talking from a canadian standpoint. I don't have anything to say about their job market because I don't know anything about it. The American government spends so much money on R&D plus private research in the country so R&D is not something that is leaving the US.

You fit the profile of someone who is going off to college and isn't going to have time for a job. Most places want long time employees.

Blindfire, the "all jobs are being outsourced" is a lie. Sure, in local cases jobs do become outsourced, but have a look at the overall growth of comp. sci careers..it's on the rise. A very steep rise actually.
