5th Grade Math Problem

From the show:
Are you smarter than a 5th grader.
It took me 3 tries to solve this problem o.o .
Lets see if you could solve it! - Answer is below in tiny letters.

There are 7 Girls in a bus.
Each girl is carrying 7 back packs
Each back pack has 7 big cats
Each big cat has 7 small cats

How many legs are on the bus? (this is NOT a trick question the answer is not 0)

Answer:
There are 10990 legs on the school bus

(2)(7girls) x (4)(343big cats) x (4)(2401small cats) = lol i got some insane number.
dunno what im doing wrong I got 184473632

there are 7 girls each of them has 7 backpacks and in each of those backpacks there are 7 cats. so doesn't that make it 343 big cats each with 4 legs?

Then if there are 7 small cats for every big cat that means there are 2401 small cats each with 4 legs.

add that to the 14 legs the 7 girls have, i got 18447362.

You wouldn't multiple each of the separate legs together, you add them.

i think people fall for a simple thing : they count 4 legs for the girls since cats have four and your counting more with cats.

anyway i got it wrong first 2 times quite tricky :)

7[GIRLS]*7[BACKPACKS EACH]*7[BIG CATS EACH]=343[TOTAL BIG CATS]*4[NUMBER OF LEGS EACH]=1372[LEGS]
343[BIG CATS]*7[SMALL CATS EACH]=2401[TOTAL SMALL CATS]*4[NUMBER OF LEGS EACH]=9604[LEGS]
9604[SMALL CAT LEGS]+1372[BIG CAT LEGS]+14[GIRL LEGS]=10990[TOTAL NUMBER OF LEGS]

i solve algebra , diffrention , solid geometry , dynamics , statics , but i cant solve this , i dont know .. packs are supposed to have legs?! or what ..

7girls= 14 legs

7^3= 343 big cats X4 = 1372 legs

7^4= 2401 small cats X4 = 9604

9604+1372+14=10990

That's exactly what I said -_-

The part where most people trip up is that they think that each girl has 7 big cats, but each girl actually has 49 big cats. The backpacks is like a "twist" or something.

It's harder than I thought it would be though, the first time I got it wrong. But I was just assuming it was a stupid problem.

add it all up and it should be right

0 for the bags, bags have no legs
1372 legs for big cats (7x7x7x4)
