When do helmets show up?

Sorry for the completely noob question, but when do helmets show up?

Does a helmet only show up at level 20+ (and then it's based on your job, thief/hunter/trader)?

They don't. They can drop tho, but you'll have to kill mobs for it.

I'm a little confused because my characters do have helm items currently.

Do you mean certain Avatar items drop for the helm slot (and those show up)?

I have a Pisces Bronze Helm or something on my level 14 European and it doesn't show up as a helmet on him (but I've seen other players with platemail helmets showing up).

On my Chinese character I've got a Small Linen Hood or something but it doesn't show up either (how do the Chinese players get those triangle hats)?

The npc ones don't show up but you can get ones that do from drops. Like with garms...a hood won''t show but a hat will. Well I think it's called a hat.

There are two kinds of head pieces, one visible, one not. The ones that are visible are only obtainable in a drop, the other is buyable from NPC.

At each level there are 2 types of helm items for each type of clothing. One that is visible and one that isnt. Npc helm itms are not visible. The only way to acquire visible helm armour, protectors, garms, is via a drop. So you can find them or buy them from others.
