Cheap Security Camera system

I've been looking around for a decent, cheap (or free - except hardware) video surveillance system. I came across ZoneMinder (http://www.zoneminder.com), which looks to have a lot of interesting features and runs on Mandriva Linux.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm sure if I read through the instructions, I could get it set up with at least basic functionality, but the end user of this system knows nothing about computers, linux, or video surveillance systems. I wanted something that would be easy for him to use to monitor his shop. If ZoneMinder is feasible for someone like him, that'd be great.

Do you have any other suggestions of another system that may be more user friendly without a huge price tag?

Yes, I am. I have a 21 month old daughter and another baby on the way.

My brother-in-law is setting up an ice cream shop back home where I grew up and he wanted me to look into how to set up video surveillance systems for his business. He doesn't want to have to spend much, seeing as how he's just starting up and trying to save some cash.

I'd imagine that could get a little pricey if they are pure bred. I think I'll go with ZoneMinder for now, and see if I can get that working. The only cost would be the hardware. I just wanted to find out if anyone else had any experience with it and get some input.
