Ahem...The SCARY Truth About Ron Paul :) The Serious Thread
Everyone is so enamored by Ron Paul because of his stances on the economy/budget, the war, etc. However, personally, some of the things he advocates scare me. For example (bold indicates things I REALLY have a problem with):
Save "snowflake babies": no experiments on frozen embryos. (Sep 2007)
Voted NO on expanding research to more embryonic stem cell lines. (Jan 2007)
Voted NO on allowing human embryonic stem cell research. (May 2005)
Voted YES on banning Family Planning funding in US aid abroad. (May 2001)
Rated 0% by NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record. (Dec 2003)
Voted YES on banning gay adoptions in DC.
Opposes "hate crimes" legislation. (Sep 2007)
Close Dept. of Education, but don't dismantle public schools.
Present scientific facts that support creationism. (Sep 2007)
Tax-credited programs for Christian schooling
Voted NO on removing oil & gas exploration subsidies. (Jan 2007)
Voted NO on keeping moratorium on drilling for oil offshore. (Jun 2006)
Voted YES on scheduling permitting for new oil refinieries. (Jun 2006)

Voted NO on starting implementation of Kyoto Protocol. (Jun 2000)
Repeal the gas tax. (May 2001)
Voted NO on increasing AMTRAK funding by adding $214M to $900M. (Jun 2006)
Rated 5% by the League of Conservation Voters, indicating anti-environment votes
Voted NO on establishing nationwide AMBER alert system for missing kids. (Apr 2003)
Rated 76% by the Christian Coalition: a pro-family voting record. (Dec 2003)
Get out of South Korea and let two Koreas unify. (Dec 2007)
No constitutional or moral authority for US action in Darfur. (Sep 2007)
Don't pressure Israel to give up land for promise of peace. (Sep 2007)
Not US role to monitor eradication of legal slavery in Sudan. (Sep 2007)
Avoid ratifying Law of the Sea Treaty. (Sep 2007)
Voted NO on $156M to IMF for 3rd-world debt reduction. (Jul 2000)
Block international highway from Canada to Mexico. (Dec 2007)
China trade not contingent on human rights & product safety. (Sep 2007)

That's a good boy Jack.
Basically, if you don't agree with what he has done then you don't agree with the Constitution. Don't worry, you can always amend it, or make a law that backdoors it.
If you want to be technical some site actually went through his whole voting record, checked it with the Constitution, and it turns out he's not 100%. They cited 3-4 things that could be considered Unconstitutional.

Not even a serious contender...he's in no position to run for office.

Ron Paul would make a terrible president. Thank God he'll never get that chance.
But one thing I've yet to understand is why people support him by giving money/campaigning for him when he has absolutely no shot to win. Why not support a candidate who has a shot at actually winning?

I'd like to hear an explanation on your opinions.
Tasdik wrote:...he has absolutely no shot to win.
So what's your record on future predictions?
Tasdik wrote:Why not support a candidate who has a shot at actually winning?
It's about what he stands for and his message of freedom, liberty and prosperity.

lol wtf?
This came from a religious debate from what I can gather.

On Education: Present scientific facts that support creationism
Q: Academic freedom is threatened when questioning the theory of evolution. An Iowa State astronomer was denied tenure because of his work in intelligent design in May 2007. Censoring alternative theories--dogmatic indoctrination--has replaced scientific inquiry. Will you encourage a more open approach to the presentation of scientific facts that contradict the theory of evolution?

I don't often agree with you silver
fact is, Paul is a religious guy who wants to provide preferential treatment to religious organizations, is anti-environment and thinks taxes are a bad idea. What I LOVE about libertarians and people who oppose taxes is that they see it as big government stealing from them, when in fact, those taxes go to providing for so much infrastructure and services. Do you like having a fire department? do you like having paved roads? do you want a good education system, including college/universities? These people always say "the private, free market will balance things out and run things most efficiently" however, it has been shown time and time again that the "market" cannot and does not have social responsibility. without government intervention, monopolies and oligopolies form, prices can be manipulated to the benefit of corporations, workers are mistreated and abused, both physically and economically, etc etc. Anyways, Paul would make a terrible president. I don't think many others will do a good job either. O'bama would be best out of these front runners, although I like Mike Gravel the most

I just have to completely disagree with you today Jack (Didn't read silver or your responses.)
We just have different views and that's that. It's sad to me people are still bringing down what was so great about this country and why it was founded. Oh well, I can't force you to move after all.

Agree to disagree is fine, but think that this country was founded on MANY things (slaves ie black people being 3/5s of a person? women the property of men? women not allowed to vote? remember those parts?) So, I think you can pick and choose what you want, but I think Ron Paul stands for too many things that are completely illogical, impractical and downright scary.

Freedom does sound scary when you look at it now. You'd be giving up a lot of your comforts nanny govt has given us. Some people like silver just can't cope with that kind of crazy talk.
The founders were unfortunately not perfect. Humans aren't. They were pretty damn close though. Also, the parts they screwed up had mostly to do with religious prejudices and common bigotry at the time.
Atheists ftw.

Isn't the constituion bascially made to be changed? That's the beauty of it.
Do you seriously think a modern country should be run in the same way as a fledging colony in the 18th century?
People like that are just laughable.

The concept of freedom was a crazy idea when the founders brought it up. I guess it's still crazy now to some people.
That's laughable.

Are you trying to make Ron Paul look bad or are you supporting him because I see nothing wrong with him and those votes you posted... Actually looks a lot better compared to the other candidates.
