That's absolutely disgusting. He was probably making the rest of the Coast Guard look bad or something, so they sacked him. Either way, I highly doubt that his rescuing the girl was the real cause of his being fired. He made the coast guard look good - they could've used it as a publicity stunt. So why fire him?

If he did it again and failed to save the girl a lawsuit against improper use of equipment and unlawful disregard of safety procedures would've found its way to the agency doors costing them possibly in the millions. I would have to agree on this one, but At the end of the day, even if the guy got killed doing so, he is saving a young girl's life. If sucks that people these days are so critical that they no longer realize the fundamental human values but dwell on policies and laws.
