His voice probably makes it so you don't even have to.

SuicideGrl wrote:it seems that a lot of your opinions are formed based on philosophy rather than an actual assessment of talent. is it really fair to say, "yah those guys are talented, but they suck anyway because they look like X"? i don't watch TV. i don't listen to the radio. i don't deal in genres or trends or anything like that. i hear music, and i judge it based on its merits. i don't take into account who else is doing what they're doing (because let's face it, there hasn't been a shred of original music in 300 years). i don't care what they look like, how they dress, what their political ideology is, or what they had for breakfast that morning. talent is talent, good music is good music, and sometimes bad music is good music, and sometimes it doesn't matter.

i dunno, maybe it's because i've been a musician all my life. i went to school for it, twice. i have played every style from Rachmoninoff to Slayer to Chick Corea. i think that kind of exposure to musical diversity puts me in a different place when it comes to judging music.

you know how you can look at a well-designed automobile, or a nice piece of art, or eat a piece of food that you don't exactly like, but you can appreciate why others like it? or that you can recognize the quality of it despite the fact that it isn't in line w/ your tastes? that's how i hear music. i dunno if that makes sense.

I'm a musician too. Have been all my life. The difference between you and me is this:

I can appreciate good musicianship but still think a band is crap. Perfect example: Dragonforce. AMAZING musicians, but do I like them or think they are worth listening to? No. Their songs and lyrics to me are silly. Both of us are victims of our own opinions and experiences, as is everyone else. To me, music IS an art, but it has become distorted and perverse because it's become an industry more so. Trends come and go, but music that changes drastically the way an entire society thinks about music, or ushers in a whole new genre (that sustains itself and influences others that follow - i.e. Refused's "The Shape of Punk to Come" is one of these albums)
To me, there are too many "musicians" who want to become famous for famous sake. They want to be the next "whatever" and be rich. That's not what music is about to me. So, band X comes out and makes a name for themselves for being something new, and refreshing and original. The problem is, inevitably, this will become increasingly marketable and bands and record labels see this and before you know it there are a thousand bands trying to recreate and immitate what's been done (i.e. the killers, the bravery, etc or ANY current-day "emo" band).

It's inevitable, and there's nothing that can be done about it. But, personally, I hate the record industry and record lables. It's become disgusting. And being in a band, yes, I want as many people to listen and hopefully appreciate what I do. But, will I give myself over to corporate america or anything else to become famous? Hell no. Will my band write songs that will get "air time" just so we can become famous? No.

Bands like Radiohead stand out to me because they write what they feel and don't write for anyone else; hopefully people appreciate it. They're talented enough and have enough integrity that they have a huge fanbase.

And back to your point: Yes, I do think it's fair to say that band X sucks because of the way the dress, because of the way they sound, because of what they discuss in their songs, because 1) they dress away because they are most likely immitating some other band or doing what they think will sell records or because their manager told them too (if you don't think that's the case, you're seriously mistaken) and 2) because if I fundamentally think they are ripping off others in either lyrics or sound or that their lyrical content is silly or fundamentally different from what I believe, I can think it's crap. I can say Johnny Rebel wrote some rather catchy country-music songs but that he's a Farking bastard because he has songs that have lyrics that say:

"America's for whites, Africa's for blacks
Send those apes back to the trees, ship those ni**ers back"

I love Opeth and have for years. I'm just worried of what they'll be like now that their guitarist has quit and the drummer has been formally replaced with the Axlerod guy or whatever his name is

i am a coheed fan. another talented lyricist. his tone of voice aside, the music itself is awesome.

@JacksColon: fck the industry. it doesn't matter to me who sounds like whom. bands draw influences from other bands daily. i am sure your band is awesome, but i am equally sure you sound like 20 other bands out there. mine does. but should you be judged for that? perhaps, perhaps not. i know i wouldn't judge you.

you have to learn to take music at face value. enjoy it for what it is rather than hating on it for the fact that what it is isn't something you can relate to, agree with, understand, whatever.

think of it this way. when your band writes a killer song, you guys stop playing and say to each other "God, that tune is unbelievable". every band that has ever written a song feels the exact same way.

I think he means the song " soulja girl" it's self, featuring Mario, and not "Soulja Boy".

Anything pop. Anything like MCR or Fall Out Boy. Any "gangster rap" i.e. Soulja Boy, 50 Cent, and whoever else is out there.

I understand what you're saying and agree with most of it. However, I think your idea on music separateness isn't in agreement with my own.

i am a coheed fan. another talented lyricist. his tone of voice aside, the music itself is awesome.

MY opinion is that it is necessary to combine all aspects involved. The vocals are the life blood for some bands and that has to fit in your equation for 'good music.' Like I said, I really do agree with you and Jacks on this, but this one thing made me think for a second.

Definitely agree with everyone about not liking something because of X. So what if XXXXX worships Satan, or YYYYY loves to strut around the hood with a 9 in his pocket. To generalize music is terribly ignorant. I'd much rather decide on the basis of individual songs.

Maybe XXXX has a song about sacrifices that I dont like. More power to me then. But what if they have a song about ancient satanic prophets that I cant get enough of?

Base your opinions on the individuality of each song (except for Nickelback XD) is what I'm trying to get at.

i happen to like Claudio Sanchez's voice, actually. so to me, they are an example of a well-defined musical whole. if you wanna see something different look into what they are doing. they are the only band i know of at the moment - all talent aside - who is in the midst of a several-volume-long concept saga album series with an accompanying comic book series based in sci-fi fantasy.

ok, so they're a little out there, but at least they are not cookie-cutter. my roots are in things like Tool, Nine Inch Nails, etc. darker, more eclectic stuff with atypical song structures, epic 12-min-long songs, that kind of thing. coheed has a lot of those elements but in a much different package, hence my admiration.

but back on topic, good bands write bad songs all the time. and occasinally bad bands write good songs. one of my favorite albums - "You're A Woman, I'm A Machine" by Death From Above 1979 - is an absolute pile of garbage from a talent, recording, and production standpoint. the singer can't sing, the drummer (who is actually also the singer) doesn't play in time very well, and the only other member of the band is the bass player, who plays well but isn't amazing. the album is a great listen if you're into something different.

the same kinda holds true for the new Chevelle album - i can't stand Chevelle, but their new record, "Vena Sera", is not only tolerable, but actually has a few good songs that i can listen to more than once in a row.

@Belgarath: i have a hard time taking things on a song-by-song basis. i believe pretty strongly that an album is a complete creation and is assembled in a particular order, produced in a particular way, to create a desired effect as a holistic entity. i nearly ALWAYS listen to an album completely through before listening to something else. as such, i tend to judge music in blocks like that rather than individual songs, which i get little exposure to since i don't listen to the radio.

I hate heavy metal, dark metal, death metal, punk, emo, gothic, most rock, most rap, techno, trance, happy hardcore, jumpstyle and tekno!

I don't like rock music and everything in that kind. So mainly not with a gitar in it. Rap is not mine thing some songs are really cool but others are just sh*t for me. Techno and trance too soft for me don't like them used to listen to them when I was younger same for happy hardcore. Jumpstyle and tekno just not my style... Especially the jumping what they do on it.

I only like R&B, (some) rap, hardcore (Gabber), Hardstyle, Splittercore, Speedcore, Breakcore, Terror and darkcore.

Mainly I listen to harder styles like terror and speedcore. Breakcore and splittercore are even harder not always mine style but it's ok for me. R&B for chilling out and just some rap I like. Mainly I listen to hardcore (gabber) and hardstyle.
