Putin...Person of the year?!?!?

Post by redneck »

Time magazine on Wednesday named Russian President Vladimir Putin its 2007 "Person of the Year."

The nod went to the Russian leader because of Putin's "extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability," said Richard Stengel, Time's managing editor.

Wtf is wrong with Time...

and look at the other 5 finalists.

Hu Jintao doesnt ring a bell
David Patraeus - no clue who he is.
Vladimir Putin - commy..
J.K. Rowling - how the hell did this bitch end up there?

Maybe you should go to the time's website and see why they did that instead of rushing to conclusions via aol(LOLOLOL).

http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/ ... 50,00.html

TIME's Person of the Year is not and never has been an honor. It is not an endorsement. It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is and of the most powerful individuals and forces shaping that world—for better or for worse.

Thread over.

Exactly! To quote TIME:
"TIME's Person of the Year is not and never has been an honor. It is not an endorsement. It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is and of the most powerful individuals and forces shaping that world—for better or for worse. It is ultimately about leadership—bold, earth-changing leadership. Putin is not a boy scout. He is not a democrat in any way that the West would define it. He is not a paragon of free speech. He stands, above all, for stability—stability before freedom, stability before choice, stability in a country that has hardly seen it for a hundred years. Whether he becomes more like the man for whom his grandfather prepared blinis—who himself was twice TIME's Person of the Year—or like Peter the Great, the historical figure he most admires; whether he proves to be a reformer or an autocrat who takes Russia back to an era of repression—this we will know only over the next decade. At significant cost to the principles and ideas that free nations prize, he has performed an extraordinary feat of leadership in imposing stability on a nation that has rarely known it and brought Russia back to the table of world power. For that reason, Vladimir Putin is TIME's 2007 Person of the Year. "

Also, Hitler was TIME's Person of the Year in 1939 FFS

True, but, I don't think he's better than gordon brown either :D

Truth is, this guy is a former KGB guy, who hires only former KGB guys and is slowly regressing Russia back into a totalitarian regime..notice how I didn't use the word "communist" :)

To actually get on topic.. Cause this might be an interesting discussion without lame random reactions from "postcount whores" with nothing actually contributing to add.

Putin is not a strange option for the reward. It doesn't take a professor to see that he actually plays the political game very well on several fronts, national and international in some cases. Though not fully according to democratic values, this man knows exactly what he's doing, and he's doing it with 100% succes. Even when he steps down, he'll be in charge, he makes sure he is. Which might not be pretty, but damn smart of his side. He get's away with it.

It might seem he'd get rewarded for doing bad things, but look at it from another point of view, which is always healthy.

J.K. rowling is a solid addition to the list for her life story. But even more for the last chapter of HP. She implemented certain events, most writers wouldn't even dare to think about in SUCH a succesfull range of books. And she did it succesfully.

Taking these 2 in consideration, the rest of the list, i agree is kinda lame.

The thing is, which people keep missing, is that he is not getting "rewarded". He is merely being recognized for the influencial and important role he is playing within Russia, but also on the international stage. Yes, I think he is a terrible person. But, that's not the point. I think you could make an argument for Hu Jintao as well. But, definitely Putin makes sense. He's not only transforming Russia (I argue for the worse) but he is greatly influencing trade in the region and negotiations relating to many things, from Iran to N. Korea.

I was merely pointing at the fact that most people reading this in newspapers see it as a reward. Which i agree, it is not.

Thanks for bringing the trade thing up, i hadn't even thought of that.

It takes more then a 'dump' to write a story that grasps the entire world. She obviously very talented in such manor, and i respect that.

good additions to the topic boys...

My comment was a joke. I have never read the books, and only a few movies, so that wasn't my informed opinion.
Nice to see who likes HP though.
