This is Alvin. Most people know me as HuyFongN or Athena_vn through my times playing SRO in 2006. I quit the game at the end of December 06 and that’s why you haven’t seen me online since then. I still lurk and call up my friends who play once in a while and ask them things that are going on. It appears that SRO is still the same as it was although without me stirring up trouble Troy seems to be a bit calmer? =)
I still miss the game sometimes and there is always the urge of coming back especially because I get comments on my 2 videos pretty much every single day even though I haven’t play since. The game was a great experience but it was also a set back to my real life that’s why I stopped. I’m almost 100% sure it is a setback to anyone who leveled on their own to their 60s, 70s, or 80s and wants to be competitive as well. I was pretty much playing this game every day except for when I was at the University studying or working. It took a toll on my school work obviously but thankfully nothing that I couldn’t rebound from.
In December of 06, exactly 1 year ago something really big happened that changed my life. My fiancé went to Houston and during that time, I know it sounds totally weird but we had a huge storm in Seattle that shuts down power for 12 days in my neighborhood. I ended up not having access to a computer and went over to my friend’s house to stay until power was back at my house. I got to hang out with my best friend whom I didn’t see for a while because of the game. We talked about cars which I didn’t think of for a while year. I ended up going shopping with my sister and my friends for Christmas gifts and those 12 days of not playing really changed it all. I realized that my life has been all about SRO for the past year. My summer days consisted of mostly spending time grinding (yes even though some people thought I was totally a botter/scammer/etc I grinded my char to 70 and worked hard to earn money for alchemy and SOS items) So ever since then I left the game and have never been back.
I gave my char and its contents to my buddy from the guild and he still has access to Athena_vn and it will never be sold or anything like that. I have pride in the character I built and would never let it be sold to someone else.
I stil miss the game and the good times I have, the friends I made, (2 of which lasted til today and we’ll always stay friends – I trusted them with everything including my char, all its items when it was in its prime) I still remember all the awesome people like nightbloom, darkjackal, frenks (yes even though he was my dark enemy by the end of the game haha), obviously Tuan, Nam_Tuan, and many more.
As for what I have been up to I’m finishing up my last year at the University of Washington with a Bachelor in Political Science. I got a new job as a Marketing Director at a Management company and bought a new car (my last one was totaled during the storm). I hang out with my friends more often and my hobby on the side is back to Automobile which is something I have always been interested in since 16 and it’s the only hobby that didn’t have me addicted like SRO
My advice for everyone who is stuck in this game is to break away for a while. Enjoy the game for what it is – a game. Don’t let it consume you to the point of forgetting your own life and have fun with your friends in real life too. Don’t forget all the things you love to do – outside of SRO – and Silkroad will be more fun when you come back to play it
