think its how u spell it - anyways my friend was tell me to get it cuz its better than xp and also looks better, doubt this has nothing to do with the program but does it run silkroad or anyother game better?

like could someone tell me the pros/cons of linux?

If you weren't looking for it before, then Linux is definitely not for you. It's starting to become more usable but it's still very much an enthusiast's OS. People try to push distributions like Ubuntu as being user friendly, but the truth is that unless you have a really good reason to switch you are better off staying with Windows. You aren't likely to see any performance boost with Windows games anyway. In fact, you are more likely to see degraded performance.

lol and safe web broswing, ripping dvds, networking, but not really games, for a work enviroment its way better provided your software works, if you have an ati card alot of stuff wont' work, if you want to linux and game you really need to have nvidia. Better interface more usuable layout, better security, very customizable, by far the better os, but games and stuff are coded to work with windows and you can get some things to run thru a program called wine but not every thing will work,

If you are interested i recomend you try it but make sure you still keep your windows because if you wanna game, not a good chioce, but I like some of the stuff it has better, like amarok is definatly my favorite music player, gaim (a chat program that can connect to many IM services), a various other little things you just can't get out of windows, i've tried a bunch of distro's and I sort of like kubunutu the best, though i do like the old suse, problem is you'll have hard ware issues, but for the most part they can be worked out with some effort, if you're lucky everything works but i havn't gotten so lucky with any computer, except my old computer i built and gave to my freind, everything works fine, but thats one computer with one distro out of dozens i've tried, unless you like fixing computers its just going to be a hassle

Doable on Windows provided you aren't a total farking idiot. I've been running without any form of antivirus for the past year or two and I've been perfectly fine.

A non-issue unless you are talking about networking with non-Windows machines. Even then, it's not likely that this will need to be done in the first place given the market-share of Windows, and there are solutions like Samba if you absolutely need them.

But it's "not really games" so this is a moot point.

Better interface more usuable layout

Try using dual monitors with an nVidia card. You can use use TwinView, which is gimped compared to Windows solutions such as UltraMon because you get one taskbar for two monitors. Or you can have each screen on a separate X session, also gimped because this means you cannot drag windows from one monitor to the other. Either way, you had to scrounge around config files for an hour to get it working until very recently.

As far as the other little things go, just download UnixUtils or GnuWin32 and modify your path variable. Then you can GREP/SED/FIND all you want.

My opinion is still that Linux still shouldn't be used for the sake of Linux. It seems to me that users of Unix-like operating systems often become what I like to call Unix-Mormons. They love to preach about how awesome their OS is because they either feel like they've discovered something profound or they don't realize that the majority of the world doesn't give a damn.

I've been working with Ubuntu / Suse for quite a while now, and in general it is far better than Windows OS's.

For everyday purposes it is far better, but if you want to game on it, I simply suggest to don't even bother yourself with the hassle.

also, i found myself using wine most of the time, so there wasnt really much point in using it if im just emulating windows all the time. Also, it kinda wiped the boot sector, so i had to reinstall windows after using it...

I also used a really old build of linux ages ago. Didnt have a proper name, just letters and numbers, began with K i think. Was completley command line and all you could do was create text files, basic flat file databases and set up networks.
