"Guido" is a pejorative slang term for a young, lower class or working class, Italian-American male from the urban Northeastern United States, most often New York and the surrounding area due to the large number of Italian-Americans living in the area. The guido stereotype is often portrayed as humorously and incorrigibly uncultured, with a thuggish and overtly macho attitude and an unyielding pride in his Italian ancestry.

The term is likely derived from the Italian proper name Guido, and is used and recognized particularly around New York City, (especially Staten Island, Brooklyn, Long Island, the Bronx, Queens), due to the large Italian-American populations within these regions.

The stereotype is usually considered derogatory or an ethnic slur; however, it is, in many cases, used as a term for an Italian criminal in the Mafia in areas where guido culture is common, much like the term "goombah." In fact, "goombah" and "guido" have often been interchangeable. However, in recent years, the term "guido" has been applied to a certain style rather than just a person of Italian ancestry. Due to the emergence of this term, some people have been referred to as "guido" despite the fact that they have no Italian ancestry.

The stereotyping of a guido involves dressing in big gold chains, sweatsuits or tracksuits, working class clothing such as tank tops, plain shirts, or "guinea T's", unbuttoned dress shirts, flashy suits, fedoras, and leather jackets. Certain hairstyles are also commonly associated with guido style, such as slicked-backed hair or pompadours. The modern guido style consists of the "blowout" or "tapeup" hairstyle, consisting of the use of hair gel or pomade to attain a spiked appearance.

American popular culture has shown guidos in such films as Saturday Night Fever, Detroit Rock City, Goodfellas, Summer of Sam, and My Cousin Vinny. The film Kiss Me, Guido uses the slang term in its title (the "Guido" referred to actually being named Frankie). The shows The Sopranos, Bullrun, & Growing Up Gotti also heavily feature the "guido" stereotype and fashion.

In Canada, particularly in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver communities, the term "Gino" (or the female equivalent, "Gina") is in many ways the equivalent term to a "Guido" (although there are some aesthetic differences). In Australia, the same stereotype is known and possibly more common (particularly in Melbourne and Sydney) and is generally referred to as "wog." However, the term "Muzza" or "Mario" was popular in Melbourne and also applied to those of Greek, African, Lebanese, Maltese and Turkish ethnicity. Normally the term guido and similar ones are associated to immigrants, gypsies and marginal workers of the lowest classes of the society. Sometimes refers to third world irregular workers with no studies with a background of Italian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, South American, or African descent.

WARDROBE: tight zipper shirts, tracksuits, designer jeans, fuzzy kangol hats, tiny hoop earrings, fake gold chains, and related Euro-trash garb and tacky cheese-wear.

NATURAL HABITAT: Known to frequent Tri-State area malls looking for club gear to waste their week's pay on (most likely spotted shopping at "Bang Bang" in Staten Island). During the day when not at their food delivery, telemarketting, or construction job, can be located at their local gym tanning or lifting weights. Can be found nightly at mainstream danceclubs they read about online (SF, Webster Hall, Etc.). Guido cars usually have a boomin' system through which cheesy music like freestyle, commercial club/trance and hip-hop (anything KTU plays) is loudly blasted.

GENETIC LINKS: Directly related to modern day urban-guidos, A.K.A. "wiggers," A.K.A. "wegros;" urban-guidos are white males who once exhibited the traits referenced above, but have now instead opted to keep it unreal, with wardrobes consisting of clothes from labels like FUBU and Rocawear which they bought on sale at Macy's. These individuals still listen to the same music and drive the same type of car as their predecessor; it is usually just their choice of attire and use of slang and poor speech skills that differentiate them from the classic guido. Most guidos are distrusting of non-whites despite the fact some of their attire and music can be traced to non-white origins.

PASSTIMES/RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES: Guidos enjoy beating up a non-white or homosexual while assisted by a group of 5-10 guido friends backing them up; engaging in date rape; and displaying their lack of rhythm by dancing poorly in the middle of a club's dance floor while non-guidos look on in disbelief.

If you know a Mike, Joe, Rob or Tony, he's probably a guido.
