Wow. Thanks for all your help, guys! I really appreciate it.
This is basically what I've gotten out of this so far, without using too much fancy terminology like "fabric softener":
Use cold water to wash my clothes. No bleach, no ammonia.
Do NOT throw my clothes in the dryer. Hang them up to dry. At the risk of them getting stiff and stratchy, but with less risk of shrinkage?
Thanks, Casey. I'll have to remember to use that next time. :]
@ Bastet:Bastet wrote:For starters what temperature are you washing your clothes at? I know you said cold, but different material have different temperatures. Second, what are the clothes made from polyester, cotton, wool, nylon.. Ahh the list goes on..
All fabrics have some shrinkage after washing.. But some have more then others.
Also what washing powder have you been using??
Have you tried hand washing, in warm water? Then hanging them out to dry.
I've worked with soft furnishing fabric (not always different from clothing) for the last 8 years, and always find that people do some stupid stuff while washing..
All my clothes are made out of cotton. I think most of my Hollister ones are 100% cotton, while Aeropostale and American Eagle are around 80-90% cotton and the rest is polyester.
I'm using Tide to wash them.
And no, I haven't tried hand washing them in warm water. I'm a little afraid to, as most people say that washing them in warm water will make them shrink.
It seems to me that the main problem is drying, so here's my question, now:
Should I not dry them in my dryer? My backyard is too big for me to hang up a clothesline, and even then, do people really do that? I mean, what if a bird takes a poop all over your clothes or something? Bugs fly on it. Etc. etc.
On my dryer, I have a few dials.
The main one has a lot of subsections. Among them are:
"Auto Dry II" - divided into subsections "More Dry", "Less Dry".
Wrinkle Guard II
Air Dry (No Heat)
Timed Dry
Touch Up
Then I have another little dial (a smaller one), labeled "Fabric", with these settings on them:
Delicate (Low)
Knit (Medium)
Normal / Perm-Press (Mid-High)
Cotton (High)
And the other dial is just adjusting the loudness of the buzzer once it's finished.
With all these settings, is it possible for me to use the dryer? If not, then because I don't think I can set up a clothesline in the backyard, would it be alright to hang them in the shower after they're done washing? I won't get much of a breeze, so it'll take a while to dry, and doesn't bacteria grow there then?
