Ni**er, Spic, Chink, Gook, Jew, and Cracker are all different racial slurs used in today’s society even though it is unethical. Racism in the United States began with Native Americans, spread to African American’s as slaves and recently to Arab’s as terrorists. Although minority groups are usually at the end of racial discrimination, sometimes they themselves are the ones being racist, blaming majority groups for their despair. Instead of proving the stereotype wrong, they relate back to old habits, and end up in bad positions. It has got to a point where they use it as an excuse for their dismay.
As defined by the Compact Oxford English dictionary, racism is “discrimination against or antagonism towards other races.” Racism is derived through stubborn beliefs and years of ignorance. These years of ignorance have caused many people to see themselves as superior to other individuals around them because they are of the better race. This superior idea was most evident back in the colonial times when rich white folk had black slaves. They brought the black people over from Africa and forced them to pay off their debts with labor. However, these black people never could pay off their debts, so they stayed slaves their whole life. As colonial times passed and more territories join the United States, the blacks started to rebel. It wasn’t until later, during the civil rights movement, they fought to be treated as equals. Society had always treated them as a lesser group and thought that they didn’t deserve the same rights that white people had.
For many years after they gained their rights, they still weren’t treated as equals. Businesses and society would still see them as racially unequal even though the Constitution said they were equal like everyone else. These racist times were when the black community started to see the white people as the enemy. They started to blame white people for their state of living. Saying that they couldn’t get a job because they were black, or they couldn’t live in a nice neighborhood because they were black, and at the time it was ok because it was the truth. In contrast, today racism is not as bad as it used to be and the black community has the same opportunities as everyone else. However there are still some black people who have not progressed very far in life and blame the white community for their hindrance. This is just wrong. They don’t have the determination to try to make their own life better. They don’t have the drive to change the stereotype of a black American, but they just blame the white people, seeing as it was their fault before.
This is where racism becomes an excuse instead of ignorance. People are afraid to be labeled as a racist, so they try to deal with the problem themselves. Today companies have a quota of the different amount of minority groups that they have to employ. If not for this quota, some people might call them racist because they don’t hire any black people, or Hispanic people, or women. They might not hire not because they are racist, but simply because they just don’t fit the job requirements. In an article by Kevin Mooney, he noted that Deneen Moore, a fellow of Project 21, a black conservative group, said “bogus allegations of racism are often used as an excuse by some to ‘work less hard’ and fall back into a ‘victimization mentality’.” Obviously the real victim is society for falling into this ruse.
Although some people are using racism as an excuse, others are actually being affected by racism. However, blacks’ and whites’ views of these actual racist problems vary. According to a poll done by Opinion Research Corp. for CNN, when asked whether racism was a very serious problem, 49 percent of blacks agreed while only 18 percent of whites did. When they were asked if they knew someone they considered racist, 48 percent of blacks and 43 percent of whites said yes. But, when asked if they considered themselves racist, only 12 percent of black and 13 percent of whites agreed. This shows how one-sided racism is. It is has become to favor the minority groups, but according to Mychal Massie, a chairman Project 21, “To consider only whites are racist is wrong,” Now minority groups are not the only ones on the unethical end of racism.
Ni**er, Spic, Chink, Gook, Jew, and Cracker are all still racial slurs used throughout the United States. Racism is still a serious problem in America, affecting both minorities and majorities. It may have diminished over the years, but it will never actually be eliminated. At the very least, we should limit our use of racism—for both sides of society.yes i actually wrote the word N-I-(gee)-(gee)-E-R
