But I agree that Mandarin is the dialect to learn, or at least to start with.

But I agree that Mandarin is the dialect to learn, or at least to start with.

Mandarin was the original langauge of China, it was born thousands and thousands of years ago, its also much easyer to learn. Cantonese is a newer language, and it is MUCH harder, even the simplified version is much harder than mandarin, but because they are so similar, you can understand some mandarin even if you dont speak it, because well lets just say..
Cantonese is like a song with no slurs and is very..choppy (not in a bad way) then Mandarin is like the same song but the whole song is slurred.

But no that does not make cantonese stupid (I don't know why you would say such a thing) Learning either mandarin or cantonese, you can understand both languages, not in depth but enough to understand it.

And yes i am taking cantonese

Right now I don't know my own language in depth (thats why im taking chinese school) so I wouldn't understand most mandarin words.

that to doest make alot of sense... i guess cantonese is newer because it came about 200 years later than chinese, because its derived from chinese

and what does it mean by simplified? there is no simplified cantonese, there is only simplified chinese. canto is different from the real chinese because its pingying adn pronouciation is different, it does not make the word it self different or the meaning

and how is it harder...? you write everything the same way and the canto. pingying is much closer to english alpha. than mand pingying

i guess i shouldn't have said its stupid but wont it be much better to learn mand. where most of the the people can understand you, or at least maybe some other dialect that is more similar to mand. like shangdong, beijing or shanghai?

but prolly soon, all chinese will be mandrin. ">.> cantanese will die just like shanghaiese.

mand is not the same as beijing there are many difference in pronuciation between the 2 dialects,

cantanese depends on where you are talking about:

in mainland china everything is simplified, no one use the traditional style except for like religious stuff traditional stuff

but in taiwain they use traditional style... come to think of it your teacher is most likely from there
