Who would join an srf member ran server?

Post by foudre »

As you may have seen there is a project for a privte server for silk, and there will be an emulator availible sooner or later, its in testing stages,

My question is i'm consdering making a rather fun server, fast lvling, buy silk items with gold, different event each week, and a gambling with the gm, to get sox items, where as i would use a random number generator to determine what you win, or any other cool ideas that would fall within reason, it would obviously be mostly english speakers seein as the nature of the source of the server, and if enough people played to even be worth keeping it up.

So i ask you if it would be worth my time, and of course it maybe free but i'd try to keep my users happy and enjoying iit, since you'd have direct contact with the gm, and a forum to leave messages

i said right now its only in testing stages, and besides i can make my own domain, and if i can freely run it on a private network i can get it global no sweat, as long as the university doesn't block the traffic. We'll have to see what they do about it, and what kinda stuff you have to do to play on one of these servers

also, if any one has any suggestions of events i could do later on, just for an idea, feal free to give a suggetion,

i mean i thought of extra sp and xp gain, extra gold, extra drops, possible even (if i have the power as a gm) to spawn a unique, and other good ideas?

If it was run by someone well known, yeah I'd join in, maybe even chip in to help pay for it
But I don't know or trust you yet so I wouldn't be able to commit

well i don't think i want to pay for it. I know no one is willing to commit i'd just like to know if i could even get a few people to help me test it out when i can get it going, and possible a few other gms. Helping aleviate traffic would be nice but i'm thinking it'll probally have to run off 1 machine, so maybe a few hundred players max server traffic, i have good net here, but its fickle is a way to say it, so i can go from downloading from over 1.6 meg a second to 50k average speed within a few hours, but luckily the times its best to get on is most likly when people would be wanting to play anyways

I have a friend who runs a hosting company who is really into sro

but I'd imagine that they host the servers not distribute the files

I sure as well wouldn't readily distribute something that involved so much work

they made it a point that they will release the emulator for free.

anyways, you would definitely need increased xp rates, otherwise we would just play on jm's servers. and dont expect anything like 100 people, since once this is released, there will probably be about 10 other servers elsewhere. silk items available for gold of course, more frequent unique spawns.. increased drop/gold rate to make up for lack of players.. and pvp events. you know, high xp rates to get everyone up in taklamakan, high sox drop rates, then everybody does massive job events/wars. woo.

but once this emulator is released, someone might get enough initiative to program some sort of... alternate silkroad client which ignores differences in pk2 files, thus allowing modded (read: expanded) sro servers.

No, a server like that would be a total failure. How many players on a normal server? Maybe a couple thousand? Even if you say that there would be a lot less players on such a server, there would still be at most, 500. A single GM supporting that many players is ridiculous and unthinkable. He/she would have to devot 24/7 into SRO for it.

And personally, it would be boring. You would never meet new people. Or party with different people. You would play SRO with basically the same people everyday. That is definitely not the point of an MMPORG.

thats basically the point, not to have scammers/asshats/ksers/etc. since when do you meed people in sro, all you do is grind all day. this would relieve a lot of the grinding and allow for a good respectful community to form.

and since when does a game need to have a GM 24/7? normal silkroad never has GM's on, and one being on even every few days would be a incredible change.

You must be new to private servers

Go play a couple wow servers or Lineage2 private servers and you'll find that most GOOD server owners know how to keep the player core centralized so that you actually do run into players as often as you would on official servers. Also the communities are smaller and easier to monitor.

and 1 GM? Where did that number come from? I dont think there has EVER been an MMO server (Emulated or official) with 500+ players that only has 1 GM.

Yes obviously private servers will never have as many players as the official servers. If you dont like that then I suggest you stick to the Joymax servers.

sign me up! Ill join, if we get good xp rates, and stuff! If u guys noticed, JM made the char models smaller, and the map bigger to hold more players. (for example ur char is like half the size of a door in constantinople). So if u guys somehow made the models bigger and made em to the same ratio 2 the buildings, i think the private server wouldnt seem so empty anymore

also im guessing this succeeds, many ppl will transfer over here, if we got good GM support and no bots. Then JM will start actually caring bout there clients and start doign soem shit about the problems of iSRO

LOL thats the funniest thing ive heard all day. Everyone running around as giants :P

I really dont think they shrunk the character models dude they just screwed up the proportions on the buildings in constantinople. Had nothing to do with server crowding lol

I think more people would end up joining the private servers than the regular ones and keep the regular ones for the bots :D.

well to those saying 1 gm wouldn't handle it, you're right, i think said something about needing some. It still a few months off, i think, i'm not sure how close to being finished the emulator is. And bigger models would be crazy, make only humans bigger, BRAW STEP ON MANGYANG, oww i got an clever in my foot, no same size, but if it were possible to modify the map that'd be sweet, make a pvp area, ban any bots i find.

The game will be about trading and theiving, no longer so much about grinding because you can hit 80 in say a month with 3 hours a day, what is that like 10 times xp? And increased drops, make the game about profit, and possible make even stat points buyable for 20 mill a point, so trading and theiving and huntering will still make you stronger, award the best hunter, theif and merchant each weak a prize, and such, it will be about the tirangular conflict the very thing that makes this game unique

and a smaller comunity means you'll meet more people becuase, when you see some one, they'll probally respond rather then ignore you because they don't know you, or are a bot.

It'll make the game more about the community, because there will be less people, who can lvl fast. You'll know the guilds you war with, and it'll be more fun to have a guild, because you'll be like a team in contestable league rather then a small fish in a lake.

And would a private server guarantee no botting? Extremely difficult. Who would be willing to be able to practically organize over 500 accounts, even if you say there are more than 1 GMs?

Like I said, SRO is about meeting new people. And you dont grind by just meeting new people. You can become quite friendly (like with your guildmates) on normal servers. Imagine a server where you were killed by the same thieves and protected by the same hunters...wow BORING

And if people would prefer private servers because of "no-botters", then too bad. Botting is just a fact of SRO and you live with it. Botters dont harm you. They just have no life devoting their lives to pixels on a computer screen.

actually, using a bot on a private server can be completely blocked by the emulator. that will be one of the features it offers, from what they've said.
