Do i need ice to tank?
Do i need ice to tank?
If i was to make a pure str character WITHOUT ice would that seriously affect my ability to tank phys dmg dealing mobs? And while i'm at it ill ask another question: How much extra could a blader tank than a glaiver.

Well i was thinking of making a pure str glaive or blade. For pve i would NOT want to have to run to each mob to take a long enough time to kill them, IMO thats wat ints do but yet i've seen many a vid of strs doing exactly that. It looks boring and slow. However i have seen vids of bladers and glaives who gather mobs around them and then use AoE attacks to deal out dmg. They almost always have around 5-10 mobs atking them and more if they can find more spawns. Not only does this kinda make more sense for a tanker but it looks MUCH more fun and a little faster.
For those who don't know what i mean heres a vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2ImcBK6MTU
During my playtime i have NEVER seen anyone grind like this but it looks so fun
So with this is consideration (which i should have posted in the first place
) would it be necessary for me to have cold buffs?

My build is a pure str blader with a tiny bit of ice (was ice blader until level 37). Switched to fire to ensure I could deal out more damage - as a blader, you do not need the extra phy prot from ice. The snow shield at 20% reduction is nice - don't have more, as it drains your mana to quickly then.
We do deal out a lot less damage but I tank a lot and my grinding is usually done so I never see my character at all due to all the mobs being in the way.
Snake Sword dance, petal sword dance and typhoon (which I have yet to get) are excellent multi-attack items to gather mobs around you. Once they are around you, combine it with soul blade force for maximum effect. The problem I have is to find the suitable areas to grind on, because of the large effect of my spells and the requirement to amass heaps of mobs.
Anyway - having 10 to 12 mobs beating at you is great fun and requires you to be alert to ensure you wolf stays a live as well as yourself. I have fun everyday I grind - which I do not think glaivers do - but as I have not played one, I do not know.
However, bladers deal less damage - your 1vs1 cape fights will be stall mated quite often, they can't kill you but you will also struggle to kill them. I used to be able to off nukers of my level or a few levels above, but since snow shield came out, that is no longer feasible. If you want to rock in pvp, then glaviers are a better choice.

And that, my friend, is why you get together an 8 man pt in the caves. With only two people in the pt, the exp loss is negligible compared to a full 4 man pt, with 3 or more, you significantly increase the exp ratio. Within 10 to 15 minutes, you will have cleared out the room from all botting nukers (dead as door nails) and plenty of spawn to keep all of you busy. If you have a nuker in the pt - be prepared to protect him or her, if her/him gets attacked by 4 to 8 pt mobs, it can be problematic.
With an 8 man pt, even moles can be grinded successfully in the caves - it is amazing with a much more increased spawn rate does to the caves.
