to keep it cooler, was this a bad idea? what could possibly go wrong

well esthetically, yes a bad idea. + it's more vulnarable to dust and other things that can accidentally happen. coffee anyone?

The fans might draw in more dust and debris if you leave it like that but if you clean your computer every once in a while as you should, then it will be alright. There are only two things to worry about. You injuring yourself by touching the circuitry while the computer is plugged in, and the minute chance that you could spill something all over the computer and it shorts the components inside.

You shouldn't have to do that to cool your computer though. Install better cooling if it isn't sufficient, but if you are reading your temperatures from some utility and are alarmed because they are 60°C+, don't worry too much. The critical temperatures of most CPUs are well over 70°C.

The only cooling I have is cheap thermal paste, a CPU heatsink/fan, and a 120mm rear fan. My CPU idles at ~40°C.

@ Disconn3cted if you have a small chassi you need to cool down it more..well if you have a big and have good cooler fan you are not need to take it off.

It's not just spilling things. It's mainly dust. And dust kills your computer.

yea but you not need put the chassi on the floor there is to much dust ..and not so high either. middle of the room is ok . and if you clean sometimes the dust off you can have the computer long time and have good cool on it.

dust can damage in more ways that that.

buy a new cover, and a new fan. A reasonable fan should cost you about 20 bucks, not enough to wreck your computer for imo.

dont put it on the floow, and not to high idd blackfox, but the middle hight is usually where the most action takes place, and where most bad things can happen to your system.

my computer hasnt had a side for a very long time. Dust builds up pretty fast on the cpu fan but dosnt take 2 seconds to clean.

Heres a pic of it, see all that dust on the fan? lol, thats after i havnt cleaned it in a while, you dont want it to get like that, lol.

I have open side as well, I was working with my computer too long and every time I needed to remove it, too much work. Mine has been open for well over 2 years. I have a fan on the bottom which basically sucks in all dust and then spurts it out all over my graphic card. My graphic card is broken, but that happened before I had an open side, it was the reason why I needed to dive in my PC all the time, though the dust is definitely not improving the card.

Hmm... I'm just gonna search the side panel

If you dont have a good cooler fan and small chassi is good to dont have any side panel at all .Even if you hade panel you still have planty whit dust. And anyway is better have cold computer then a hot can make the game lag ..the graphic card can be crazy .

But well if you leave in a castle yea then I dont think you need to take off the panel is enough cold.

Also take in the issues of the core of your CPU, if its like a Prescott the temps will be higher than the other cores, just as a example. I leave my side on but its windowed and has a fan hole on the side and top.
