Is the forum really two years old? Just noticed Peebz, who is like member number 6 or something was registered 01 Jan 2006 (1 year, 8 months, 14 days).

I'd definitely consider myself the old generation. Things were just generally more fun back there. There were famous people among the boards who were pretty much unanimously loved (Rai, BlueFeather, Monition, Moogie, Dem, Mamba). Much less drama and much less flames to be sure.

Also, most of the time people posted because they had something to say, not to just... post. There were way more threads worth reading then nowadays.

It just comes with the forum being about 50x bigger now though, nothing that wouldn't be expected anywhere else.

I think I came here at the transitional period between the old and new generations. All I remember was cin and myself answering everything in Character & Skills, and Questions & Answers when the sections were close to dead. A sort of a good cop/bad cop thing.

As for impressions, I don't really think join time counts as much as post count (oh, unless you know someone personally), no matter how much anyone denies it post count does play a role in your impression of a person, even if it is just a fleeting thought.

I do think SRF may be going down and that's why I'm sticking around in OT now, where the average post is more intelligent and intelligible than the abundant idiot and redundant posts in GD. Obviously the 'old' generation is mostly around OT, while some still post in GD so I guess I'll have to agree with that the oldies were 'better'.

That's absolutely right. And the smileys and emoticons are poor substitutes for the nonverbal cues present in spoken language. Much of the tact added to a criticism is in the enunciation or the facial expression, which you hear and see in your head as you're writing something, but isn't conveyed to the reader.

The need for nonverbal cues disappears with familiarity. When the forum was smaller, everyone knew each other and knew when someone was joking or maybe just having a bad day. When you don't know the poster, your first response is probably to take the comment in the worst possible light and get defensive and angry.

We need to have an SRF party where everyone can meet each other. I guess vent is a good start for that. (I need to get back on!)
