RIP xbox :(

Post by Colb »

I know I saw a thread around here about someones XBox 360 biting the dust. Well, I've had mine about 3 months or so, and I've taken really good care of it. The only problems I've had from it is the "Disc Unreadable" error with EA Sports games.

Well last night, my friend was having a football get together. I brought my 360 and someone else brought theres (2v2) We got into the first game and just a few minutes into the first quarter and my 360 does the wierd screen glitch (lines all across it) and locked up. At first I thought it was the TV signal.

Upon resetting the system it gave me red lights on the front (all red lights were lit up except the top right, when the system is laying down flat). I let it cool off for a while and started it back up. It would work fine until we got into game again then it'd freeze up. So I assumed it was overheating.

Image

I honestly thought they fixed the overheating problem with the second edition. I've only had mine since about March or April. When I move it, I have a thick padded briefcase it goes into that I custom fit for it. I have one for my PS2 as well... because I know how fragile these things are.

So the question is:

Now what?

I can only find about 50% of my documentation on the system, but I'm sure if I look harder I could find more. Does anyone know the warranty on these things? If it's only 90 days I'm probably screwed, if it's 180 days or 1 year, then this problem should be covered seeing as it wasn't any type of physical damage.

Comments?

Microsoft extended the warranty on all systems to 3 years and pays for shipping both ways IIRC.

My friend keeps his xbox in a mini-fridge, and his Ps3 next to a fan.

Rofl.

I used to have a vacuum hose that went from the vent on my window unit air conditioner to the intake fan on my old computer case. It was pretty leet sauce.

But this is Afrotech. We don't have high budget shit like pipes. Or fans.

Haha

Thanks for the laugh.

Call up support and have your system refunded. It entails you sending in your system and they'll send you one back in 6-8 weeks, which means you're screwed on halo 3 haha.
Until you turn it in there is a temporary fix you can do with it. It involves wrapping the 360 in a towel for a couple mins and then it's fixed (Look that up b/c I'm not 100% sure how-to.)
They only starting fixed the 360's when the new warranty was announced, which was about a month ago.

Called Microsoft, verified the purchase date, my console serial number, and my legal ownership status of the console. Took about 10 minutes from the time I called to the time I hung up.

They're sending a special shipping box which I will receive tomorrow afternoon, then I am to send my console back (shipping is prepaid by them). They said once they receive my console, it could take anywhere from 1-6 weeks to process it and send a new one out (I understand the time frame as I work as a hardware technician and it can get quite busy at times).

The downtime sucks, but I do give them credit for not hassling me about anything. The guy basically asked me about 3 questions about what I tried troubleshooting and after that he filed the order and settled it. I'm just glad I don't have to pay for anything.

Never really been a fan of Microsoft, but I think they handled this pretty well.

Hahaha, sorry to hear about that, but my uncle works at Microsoft Headquarters, and all they do is fix up one of the many other 360s that have been sent back, and they resell them, or send them as replacements.

As for the fail rate, 33% sounds about right, my cousin got a BRAND NEW (Not one of the old fixed up ones) Xbox 360 for christmas, and so far he has had to replace it 7 or 8 times since last christmas.

And people wonder why I'm a sony fan. PS3 ftw 8)

P.S. Sorry, I was laughing at Microsoft, not you or your xbox or your problem

I'm a hardcore PS2 fan. Always will be. It was one of the best consoles ever released. But that's just my opinion. I bought a 360 because I wanted a next-gen console, but I wasn't ready to fork over $500+ for a PS3. Not to mention the 360 had a ton of games out already and the PS3 didn't.

I really liked the 360 Dashboard and the LIVE features. It had room for improvement of course... but I was satisfied until this happened.

For all those people who ran out and bought the Xbox 360 first generation I laugh. For such an expensive item these problems shouldn't be occuring. I'm waiting to see what PS3 has to offer before I run out and buy a console.

:P

Anyways
I'm considering not buying the parts for my $1200 gaming pc and just buying an xbox 360. It can run the same games as the pc except i'd spend $900 less. I'm not sure if i should get either one now. I'm not about to buy a $300 paperwieght >_>

I think it's important to keep it in a properly ventilated place, I keep it in the coldest room in the house.

No! Bad! AOTS is the festering pile of **** that murdered The Screen Savers, an actual worthwhile show. G4 is also a festering pile of ****. They completely dumped every TTV show except for X-play once they acquired the TTV viewer base (firing or having all TTV employees quit except for Adam Sessler in the process) then proceeded to dump most shows that had anything to do with gaming to replace them with what? Cops and Star Trek!?

I agree with the last part. G4 dropped most of the shows i liked :(

The only shows that i like on that channel are X-play and AOTS now.

G4 isn't really the gaming channel anymore =[
