Reputation system

Post by Ryoko »

Should I try installing this? :D

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=368075

Nothing more fair than being judged by your peers.

Thoughts and opinions welcome. Remember theres always risks of totally screwing over the board installing these mods =)

I remember this coming up a while ago in a suggestion thread, but I thought you were set against it? I still think it's a pretty useless feature that starts petty arguments and doesn't add to the board as a whole. So I voted no.

Yeah, Baker! I voted no 'cause the reasons that you already pointed.

Ranking systems (even a post count) can, sometimes, lead to petty arguments, summary disqualification of the user opinion (no matter how true it is) etc.

Less chance of screwing it up if yo make backups of both the SQL database and all your phpBB files beforehand then setting an installation time and during that time diable the forum in the configuration...and installing it via EasyMod would be wise if its compatible.

Anyway im against it...it will just be abused.

Agreed with the above reasons as well as a few that I'm having trouble putting into comprehensible sentences.

You know what would be cooler? A point system. SuicideGrl is my motivation for this. If someone were to make a good post, +1 points for you! Help out a new poster? +2 points! I don't know how you would implement that though.

I am just afraid that personal squabbles would get in the way of genuine reputations.

yes it could be abused bu then not maybe have it as a privilage usually a spammer has under 100 posts so do it for peoplewho reach 100 post

if not maybe give it a trial period like 1 month

In answer to the concerns of abuse:

People who have new, or low rep (or negative) can only give out 1 point, whether positive, or negative.

People with high ammount of points, give out more.

So what if one person gave 50 people -1 point, while mods and other regulars hit for +10 at a time

I vote no simply because, lets think what this really does..

What good does it do for our already healthy community? - nothing

What can it do? - Bring jealousy, it will be abused, and it labels who is better and who isnt. We know how we'd like this to work, but look at it realistically... all the more active members will have a better rep than some that can't be as active, do you need a system to tell you who posts more? nah we have a post count for that.

I have only had a positive experience with the rep system.

It helps newbies to see who the most helpful people on the forum are\ who to avoid.

Thats the problem. Our community isnty healthy. The PM complaints about certain others here roll in daily.

There are daily arguments in multiple threads.

I can see how it would make sense to let users take some control, so when they are disappointed with someone or angry they can take it out with a meaningless reputation lowering and then not feel they have to start flaming threads or bitch at the admin/mods. In theory. And if that's your motivation, I suppose it could be worth a try. But still the mechanics that you say answer concerns of abuse are wide open to abuse because we all know that mods are players too and not perfect. Favoritism, nepotism, cronyism, maybe other -isms, a rich-get-richer sort of system is the danger here, because two high-rep users can boost each others' rep with thier extra power if they are so inclined.

It doesn't usually happen in some sinister way, though, it can be very innocent, especially if the two users in question are friends just playing around. Maybe Sui makes a witty comment and I give him 10 points. Then I correct his english and he gives me 10 points. Then maybe just for fun I decide it's hand-out-points day so I give him another 10. Sui thinks that's funny and gives me 10 for it.

Now, Sui and I would probably never do this. The same can't be said of everyone. If you still want to give it a spin, the response seems pretty evenly divided, I say that's good enough for a test run as it can always be removed. I have a few more comments that are better suited for PM, just a heads up for you Ryoko, will write it as soon as I skim the rest of the forum.

i guess by having the rep system u could sort of enforce politeness in the threads because this way people will look at their rep and if its low they will know they're doing something wrong

I honestly think just handing out warnings when warnings will do would suffice over the reputation system. Seen too many boards where it turns into the cool people vs. the 'not'. Nothing more than a popularity or bit-measuring contest.

I think that we should just try the system... cuz if u don't try it, then u'll never kno wat it could be :) If it works and enriches the forum positively, like giving members a new incentive to post more helpful posts, then great, if not, then into the trash can it goes

I'm all for it.

Someone mentioned only users with x amount of posts could rep and be repped, I think you should do it this way.

Don't forget, there is usually a limited amount of rep you can give out daily, like 5 people or so, so you will use them wisely, if at all. You also cannot rep the same person more than once in a certain period of time. I'm sure both of these options you can change the amount of time for each, so you could give like 24 or 48 hour limit on how many times you can rep the same user.

If you keep a relatively close eye on people and the rep system from the start, it will be unlikely that people will have monster rep points which will put a regular user way down into the red if he feels like an asshole.

Besides, I ahve a feeling most people on this board who will have the higher rep, will have earned it, which implies that they will more than likely not abuse the sysem to there is no need to worry about that.

I like reputation systems, they are fun, can provide constructive criticism, and offer motivation for the losers who feel good from having high rep poitns ( :P ) to actually contribute to the board in a good and helpful way.

Again, I'm all for this. If you're skeptical, I suggest you make up a backup of the forum, and install the mod anyway. Try it out for a month or two, and if it's too much of a hassle or you think it is affecting the community in a negative way, scrap it.

Heh i think this future will lead to mass account creation wich will have only one purpose... Also you can put any limits you want if they want it they can do it... since there are many ways to avoid those limits.

Naw. Cuz users with no / little rep only give 1 point or so. It'd be futile.

Then they act like an ass, and I crack em for -20 a comment.

Heh you know, on this internet you can find anykind of people and those "hardcore ppl" will do w/e they can for some things in these games/forums, also there are 324243 softs for auto-create accounts and to activate it requires only 1 click :)

I like the idea of this system.. and with some limits it would work smoothly
ex. after you reach X amount of posts you get X rep points.
ex. you can give only X rep per day.
ex. if you use bad language or do any other bad things you will loose X rep points. /etc

Heh this is kinda like Recommandation System on Lineage2 (ingame) :P))

Just implement it ryoko, and we'll test it for a few weeks, if it works out, it stays, if it doesn't, it goes. Simple no?
