I haven't been having any issues running SRO in Ubuntu, other than minor graphical glitches like guild/union icons not showing, or buff animations that are missing.
When I open SRO, it runs in an 800x600 "full screen" in the top-left corner of my screen. Since it's "full screen", there are no window decorations around it, just the SRO graphics themselves. I can go into the game options and change it to 1024x768 to match my desktop, then the game takes up the actual full screen. However, when I log out and restart SRO, it's back to an 800x600 "full screen".

like has been said, use 9.41, and enable a virtual desktop in your WINECFG.
Well I'm not home to upgrade my system to 9.41 yet. I was basically just saying that SRO is running good for me without much of a problem. Yes, it does only cover part of the screen by default, but that doesn't bother me all that much.
Does the virtual desktop enable SRO to remain on the full screen by default, so you don't have to change it each time you log in?

ANyone else having trouble with the latest version of SRO and Linux?
I am still running PClinuxOS and had Wine 0.9.39. As soon as the update came out, I was not able to play.
I am going to try the latest version of wine and a few other things..

Allrighty then.
I just swapped my PCLINUXOS drive for my Ubuntu drive and guess what!??!?!?!?
SRO works just fine.
Text is a little jacked up looking, but the game seems to run and play just fine.
More testing and a report back here later.

I dual boot ubuntu and Pclinuxos 2007. I also have a Xubuntu machine running in the next room.
I primarily play on the PCLOS machine.
Guild Emblems are working under all distros i think, as I see them on the Xubuntu machine also.

if you have msttcorefonts installed and you are running Ubuntu, in a Terminal do:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove msttcorefontsGreece level 39

Thats nice to know because when I installed it on Ubuntu like 120381283 years ago, there was tons graphic errors. I might give it a try again when I get help getting my linux set to 1440X900 with the ati driver.

Well I rebuilt my system. I installed Ubuntu 7, feisty fawn, let the system update, enabled the nvidia drivers, installed wine from apt, and installed SRO. It worked alright except player names and guild names/icons didn't really show up and skill animations as well.
I updated wine by following the directions on winehq's site to get their newest version into my apt repository, installed the latest nvidia drivers from nvidia's website, and now graphics in sro are messed up. Many textures for different elements are missing or strange colors. Some mountains are see-through. In the opening sequence, the water is a collection of squares of different colors instead of water. I've tried changing in-game graphics settings but nothing seems to work.
I'm using wine 0.9.45, nvidia drivers from their website for Linux (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run), and used nvidia-xconfig, and nvidia-settings to reconfigure xorg.conf using default settings at 1024x768@85. Could the refresh rate be bad? I thought I used those settings before, and I know my monitor and card (nvidia geforce fx 5200) are capable of the resolution, and higher.
Thoughts?

I'm not sure what the problem was with my installation. When I first set up Ubuntu and got wine, nVIDIA and everything set up, SRO worked pretty good except skill animations and intermittent problems displaying player/guild names and icons.
Only thing I changed after that was I installed kubuntu-desktop. That's likely the problem because SRO didn't seem to work well after that. Come to think of it, now that I have kubuntu on there, everytime I boot the system, X fails to load because the nvidia drivers can't find a suitable configuration. I have to reconfigure it from a virtual terminal each time. The drivers allow me to set up 1024x768@85 within Gnome, but when I reboot, it complains of "no screens found".
Someone mentioned SRO works better in PCLinuxOS so I will try that.

I'm having the same problems with the textures and the mini map. I'm currently installing PCLinuxOS to try SRO from there because I remember I think ddcc was saying it looks better through there. So I'm trying all my options.
Edit: I noticed my repositories in PCLinuxOS are RPMs. Do I still use the ubuntu repository from winehq, or is there something else I'm supposed to do? My system doesn't seem to have apt-key...
Edit2: After another look, I realized my system was not up to date. I did not use the apt repository for wine from winehq. Instead, I did an 'apt-get update;apt-get upgrade' and then installed wine via 'apt-get install wine'. This gave me wine 0.9.44 which is working great!
