Just a minor question. As of now I have more than 30,000 fonts to pick from. I used to have 1500 and I was a bit lost. But now I'm totally lost.. So I was just curious how do you select them?
For most of the time it should b common sense. If you have a dark grungy sig you choose something that matches. For most of the time its not the font but its how you place the text.
Unless the sig is a Farking poster, chances are that the Farking text is small. And if the Farking text is small, a non-serif font WITHOUT any Farking antialias is the best choice.
I don't have many fonts myself but I just scroll through them and use w/e looks nice, also now and then I goto http://www.dafont.com/en/ and look around for some.

+1 you will waste alot of time looking for fonts, at the expense of the possibility of not finding a good one at all :/
Whenever I need a font for a specific subject, I just go to http://www.dafont.com and type in that subject. I also have some of the more popular fonts of each type downloaded and ready for easy access ^^
I have a couple of favorites as I think everyone that use photoshop or illustrator does. Obviously different situations calls for different fonts but there are also a couple you should know that is a success for each piece. However if you want to go with a completely new font you have never used before and do not know that well, then I think you'll have to scroll through all of them, or maybe google a font almanac for easier viewing.

If he doesn't feel the lag I don't think it really matters until he starts seeing the effects of the large choices of fonts, and then it won't be too late to delete and resolve the problems.

That's what I do. But I typically only use arial/tahoma/verdana since they're standard for webpages.
I've got a select few I go to first, but usually it's browsing through the font window or keeping http://www.dafont.com open and taking a quick peak there in case I find something I like better.
