Downloading copyrighted material without the owner's consent isn't.

Simple as that.

your right, but so many people use it its so hard to get caught

not really if the gov't wanted to they could use torrents to and when it connects to all thos eothers compys that are seeding they can record the ip adress and other such info...track the person down through there ISP and BAM you've just been caught.....thats if they really cared

your wrong look more into how Torrents work

wtf you are talking about silver? the guy in Hong Kong was tracked down by that method (yes, first BT seeder arrested for spreading copyrighted materials in the world)

in canada, it is okay to have pirated materials, but not when you are making a profit off them

I've been using it for 6 months - 1 month now, I keep it running all the time, and I have had no issues at all. It's a nice little IP blocker.

There is no simple yes or no answer to this one. It depends on:
1. What do you use the torrent for?
2. Which country do you live in?

The torrent in itself is nothing illegal, but it can be used to download/upload material of which you do not own the copyrights nor do you have permission of the copyright owner to upload/download the material. In that case, it starts to depend on which country you live in.

In the Netherlands for instance, downloading movies/music is legal, even if you do not own the original. Uploading however is not, so unless you can block the upload by your torrent program you are still performing an illegal act.

Which country are you in?

Ok, Finland is easy. :)
Private copying is allowed, even without owning the original, as long as you do not circumvent an effective technical protection measure. Since CSS is no longer considered an effective technical protection measure, based on the latest legal case on this matter, you can make a copy of a DVD for your own private use. Finland does require the source of such a copy to be legal, which means downloading music/movies without permission of the copyrightholder is considered illegal in Finland. Uploading is of course illegal as well.

For other things not so much.

However, asking for links to torrents and such is strictly forbidden in this forum.

Are movies & music illegal?

Not if you own the original iirc.
EG I own a dvd of some movie and then I can have it on my pc if I don't share it.

lol well if you get caught dling a movie which you already own good luck with that excuse~

And yea, torrent, kazaa, emule all those are legal to have, its just how you use em which isn't.
µ

I've paid the copyright on my own copy.
If I DL it or rip it on my comp, it doesn't matter if I don't share it.
Sure it's not something one would do, DL movie one has on a DVD disk.

Please be careful: any similarities between law and common sense are purely coincidental! Just because you have bought the original does not mean that you have the right to download a copy. It completely depends on the copyright laws of your country!

As a simple example:
In the Netherlands it is legal for me to lend you a CD, and for you to make a copy of that CD. It is not legal for me to make a copy of my CD, and give that copy to you. The result is the same (you having a copy of my CD), but in the second case I am guilty of copyright infringement.

downloading things is legal but uploading is illegal unless you have the rights to it.
