if you are level 16 and your masteries are fire5, light3 and bicheon6,
then your highest mastery level is 6.
in that case, your gap is your character level minus your highest mastery
level, which is [16-6=] 10.
when you level on a 0 gap, you get the most experience and the least skill
experience. the higher the gap, the more skill experience and the less
character experience you get.
therefor, if you read farming topics, you see that everybody is talking about
a 9 gap. that means they are level 16 and their highest mastery level is level
7. on a 9 gap, you get the most skill experience and the least character
experience. on a 10 gap, you get the same, so 9 gap is the way to go if you
farm.
that about sums it up.
so its your highest mastery level (NOT your skill levels) and its
NOT your total mastery level you should look at.

A gap is a difference between your mastery level and your character level.
The larger the gap, the less xp you get (pretty significant) and the more sp you get (less significant, yet still there).
I seriously think this explains it well, but this site MIGHT help you understand it a bit more: http://www.janrique.com/silkroad/SP.htm
As you can see, the larger the gap, the more sp you make.
There was this one discussion which told the numbers, I can only remember two of them:
Gap 0: X1 sp.
Gap 9: X19 sp.
X being times, thus at a 9 gap you make 19 times more sp... But it wasn't really times, it was some calculation... Anyways, I'm probably just confusing you. So... Bigger gap: More sp per level.
[EDIT:] cin explained alot of stuff I didn't. His explanation is better, but mine might help a bit too, so I'll leave it here.
