Is Life Being Wasted?

In no way is this thread intended to create flames... I'd just like to voice my opinion, and hear what you guys think about it. Do you guys think like me, or am I just a freak?

So...
Why do you play SRO, or any game in general?
Pertaining specifically to SRO, many of you complain about the game, it's poor management, the botters, jerks, gold-buyers... why do you stay with it? You grind hard, you grind even harder, you play 6-7 hours a day, there goes your summer – and still, you see the botters rush past you, to 80, fully farmed, and own you in PvP with a gold-bought SoSun 64+9 Glavie.
I'm contemplating quitting the game, is all. All of a sudden, it just seems like a sudden waste of life. You farm, and you farm, and you farm, at the Bandit Stronghold, and get 250k SP. You 0-gap all the way up to 80, get a nice weapon, and pwnz0rz everybody your level.
Then what?
You're actually 80-years-old IRL, and you sit back in your rocking chair, and you reflect on what you spent your childhood doing. Or your young adulthood, for some people. Which are supposed to be the golden years, the best years of your life.
While other people were hanging out with their friends, playing basketball, dating a girlfriend, you were in your house for hours, playing a game, that gets you to nowhere?

And BTW, once again, this isn’t a flame against you guys – the person that I listed above, that’s me. I’m like that. And yeah… I’m thinking about quitting – maybe I’ll come back when Europe comes out, just to try it out, but… I just don’t see what the entire point of playing SRO is – there’s a fine line between playing a game, and being relaxed by it… and being obsessed about it, banging your head on your keyboard because farming is SO damn boring.

What are your opinions? Do any of you feel the same way I do? I wish I could quit the game – but I can’t. Not enough willpower? I mean… I just find it such a waste of life, all of a sudden – never felt this way before, but I’m feeling it now. I could be doing so many THINGS with my time. Learning how to do something new, learning another instrument… chasing after a girl.
Regardless if I quit or not, I’ll be sticking around SRF – this forum is awesome, and the community is great as well.

well entertainment is VERY important to humans, it keeps us living as well as food and water and air

SRO is a good source of entertainment, yes i do like RTS over MMOs, but either way its FUN

i do believe i have a life ( i have had a few gfs *did not break up cause of games.... or did it 0_o* go to the movies w/ friends, hangout at friends house, play sports, go to parks etc.) but games offer things that life doesnt, so i see no reason to balance games with life

so ur lvl 80 on SRO then what? u move on, u cant possibly think u learned NOTHING! from all that grinding, and ull take those lessons with u, whether its never play rpgs again, or patience, it HELPS

With that time, couldn't you have been doing things that had a more direct, productive impact upon your life?

And TBH, what LESSONS do you learn?

I met a great bunch of people, who hopefully I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life. When I ran GT i did play 3 hours a day. But really what is that? On weekdays its just a good reason not to do homework. And On weekends if I get home a bit late, I can just grind till the early hours of the morning.

Maybe I didn't earn anything in RL from this game, but I've learnt many lessons, met new great people. And I don't regret one minute I have "wasted" playing this game.

I don't play as much now due to the fact I'm at level 77 and can't be assed to grind anymore.

You basicly get out of this game, what you put into it.

And now I really don't know what I'm typing about so I'll just shut up and hit submit

What do you gain? Absolutely nothing except maybe a few memories. I think most of us here are not playing this game with ideas to get rich or anything like that, it's obvious if you wanna make money or be more intelligent then go read a book. If your playing a game and you still don't know WHY your playing it then you need to go take a hard look at yourself. Silkroad is just a game like Madden for example, it's just to provide some entertainment for whatever amount of hours with friends, so that when your older lets say you can lookback and remember the good times of your younger life.

So yeah botters will be lvl 80 with awesome sosun weapons and all that, so what? Does it mean anything in real life? It makes no difference if that person has a sun and "pwned" you 100 times with it, you just have to realize it's a game and has no meaning.

However, non ego man - those things that you listed, they're actually... they benefit something - they help society in some way, or atleast, is more.. concrete? Silkroad is my TV replacement. Most people watch Tv, I play a mmo. Thats what is funny on the news and the forums. People claim you have no life for playing a game 5+ hours a day, but you do if you watch 5+ hours a TV a day? At least mine is interactive =)

I don't get to play as much as I use to but all I use to do is play silkroad and it saved me TONS of money, $40 a month in silk is nothing to what i can spend in 1 night of drinking.

But this debate can go both ways. I would rather see kids spending 8 hours a day on a computer then i would spending 8 hours a day smoking weed and stealing cars.

Its a no win argument.

What is the meaning of life? Is it to have fun by going out and hanging around with your friends and all or is it to stay and play silkroad for the rest of your life? Some do, some don't. They're not mutually exclusive. You know what, as an American, I have the resources available to me, just as an average person, to save lives. Many lives. I could dedicate my entire existence to helping others, like Mother Theresa. But I don't. Am I somehow bad because I haven't applied 100% of my resources and energy in altruistic endeavers?

I don't think so. I have my own business at a job I enjoy and I work hard (unless I'm posting on SRF). I sit on the board of a few charities, helping them to benefit society. But I also grind for a few hours, a few nights a week. And I watch movies and I read books, etc. etc. I balance my job, my family and my me time. If I give up one and apply too much of my time to the others, I usually end up depressed, resentful or poor (depending on what I've given up).

Take care of business and love and respect the people around you (including yourself). There's definitely room for SRO in that formula.

Well that depends, if you're able to remember what you did in a video game. I think the things you do in real life will be remembered more though. For example, i remember what i did in real life about three years ago better than i remember the great moments that me and my friends used to have on an online game we used to play a lot, and i mean A LOT! People grind their chars for months then something happens and all joymax says is "sorry you gotta start over." Fk that.

Sro is a nice game to play on the side. But when it comes to playing a game for hours at a time, i'll stick to a p2p game like WoW.

Yeah I'm sick of sro players always talking bad about WoW. In that game if your account gets hacked, even if it's your fault they will help you. Most of the time all or most of your items will be restored. And the community is 10x better than sro. I have never had anyone in WoW try to scam me. In sro there is an attempt to scam me every other trade I do.

I really could get into so much more about how WoW is better but I don't feel liek typing out 20 pages. ;o

Its safe to say that is "Extremely" rare these days. Your throwing out alot of "what if questions" some like your charity work comment less then 1% of the population would do even if there were NO computers.

Just like others have stated your version of having a life is going to be different then others. Its a two sided argument.

To say someone has no life because they are doing something they enjoy is crazy.

Example 1: Someone who plays silkroad has no life, but someone who goes out partying has a life.

Example 2: Someone who goes out partying has no life, but someone who goes to college has a life.

As you can see one form of no life can be another form of having a life. Its a no win argument.

this is what i have to say ,
i have gotten so much out of this game i have gotten friends,stress relief,more friends, and many skills u can use irl, met a great community of ppl(srf), and i did gain one awesome friend that i talk to almost everynight. I do belive it is true u get only what u put into it. i remember times i have just stood in dw and chatted for hours with my union!!! so i belive u get alot out of this game.
