do not.. i repeat DO NOT try to flush it down the toilet. It may just be me, but cockroaches dont flush very well...

I came home drunk last night. A Cockroach on my door. I ended up sleeping for 3 hours on my patio.

urhg, I can't watch fear factor with the super madagascar cockroaches, makes me puke.
If you have these in your house (http://www.hot-screensaver.com/wp-myimages/cockroach.jpg) I'd run away screaming. Call an exterminator you ain't get it done otherwise.

There are some kinds of beetle that look like roaches but aren't. Get sticky traps and bring one to an exterminator to see if they actually are cockroaches.

If you eat food anywhere in the house that's not your kitchen (or dining room if you have one), don't. Eat only in the kitchen (or dining room), at the table, and clean up after. Wash the dishes right after you eat. Or if you have a dishwasher, load them instead of letting them sit on the counter or in the sink. If you have pets, don't leave pet food sitting around in an open container either.

If you live in an apartment building you might not be able to get rid of them if someone in another apartment is dirty. I had this problem with mice a year or two ago, we were on the ground floor and the people above us were messy so the mice would go through our apartment to get to the food. But depending on where you live a roach infestation may be a health code violation which means your landlord is legally obligated to hire an exterminator.
