Perhaps I should have been more explicit, but what I meant is that anybody can install a proxy on a machine that has sufficient bandwidth. Most free proxies out there are to hide HTTP traffic and are quite laggy, but a gaming proxy can be setup on any machine with enough pipe. My point is not to use a free public proxy server but rather that it's easy to set one up, especially if someone has access to a colo.

That's correct, the MAC does not change on its own without *ahem* intervention, but it's a simple matter of notifying your ISP and giving them the new MAC.

You're right - nobody would swap hardware over and over, but then again they wouldn't have to. These things are easy to change without a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Then again, I'm not sure too many people would be willing to play a game that was as intrusive as Windows XP, especially considering the problems that have been associated with activation from legitimate customers.
