I think I know what's up with the "data backups"

Post by desolator144 »

You know how the last couple "updates" were just data backups, minus the chat thingy? Well I'm about 99.9% sure that they do a data backup every Tuesday whether they release an update or not because they don't do it any other time and the database is HUGE. They just needed something to put on the list for why they're even having downtime.
So what are they doing, taking the month off? Of course not, I think they're working on a massive update. Maybe Europe but probably not because I don't think they even have that working properly in KSRO and even if they do, that'd be awfully fast. I think they're spending all their time on the lvl 90 cap update with those ugly goat monsters and birds and stuff. That's really the only thing that would explain it.

Every Monday night / Tuesday morning the servers go down. Been like that since January 06 Maybe before I couldn't say wasn't there.

This is for SERVER MAINTENANCE

All right in this maintenance a lot of shit can happen. Don't speculate about stuff seeing as for the past 3-4 months we aint had an update only client swaps. Data Backup most probably is a fancy way of JM saying server is down but even if it ain't .. it falls under maintenance.

Goat's are in west asia. Nothing to do with Europe. We allready have asia and all the monsters proven by cruor and zoomhack.

joymax knows their servers suck monkey dick and the possibility that one of em drops again (due to faulty hardware, hackers) is so ridicously high that they decided do a massive data backup every tuesday.

rollbacks ftw

I'm graduating with 2 IT degrees this May and I took Systems Analysis so trust me, I know how all technical projects go. You absolutely must back up an entire game's database every week, if not more often. But since that takes several hours to do, they do it every Tuesday. All they have to do for an update is throw some new files out on the server, test them, and have everyone download them later. That probably takes a half hour if that. So the major event every Tuesday has always been a data backup. They're not doing it instead of updates, they're just not doing any updates for some reason. And that reason is one of 3: 1: because they decided to be lazy and not make any lately. 2: because they've been distracted by something else important not involving updates like their office starting on fire or something or 3: because they're working on an update that can't be written and finished in a week or two.
I like to think it's #3

Yeah...server maintenance works for me, regardless as to what else they may be doing during that time. Hopefully working on new stuff, and backing up everything to that point. It's good they backup data - would you like to be the one to try to log into a server and find your L80 char is gone b/c there was some 'data corruption' and they couldn't restore it?

that would never, ever happen. There are transaction log backups every once in a while throughout the day which preserve everything you did and possibly differential backups but those take way longer so they might not do those. But those backups are always applied to a full backup which is a copy of the entire database which I assume they do every Tuesday. And a standard backup rule is to keep copies of the last couple full backups also. So they'd have to have your server, and all the backups destroyed but then everyone would have to start over. The only way you'd lose a high lvl character is if you started a new one right after a transaction log backup and then lvled to lvl 80 in a couple hours and the server crashed before the next transaction log backup.

Data Backup is just, well, data backup. It is used for rollbacks. And if there wasn't any data backup's then instead of a rollback it would just be all gone and all chars gone and everything. And it is true that before the last few updates, they did data backup alot. The 90 Cap will probably take longer because theres alot more than just 10 more lvls and a unique. They also got to add the new area which isn't even shown on map and they got to add all teirs of 9TH Degree!!!! And new lvl 9 alchemy tabs and new quests. and even the new skills :!:

Wow desolator144 seems to know what he's talking about. Which probably makes him twice as good as the people @ Joymax. :)

Someone get the GM in charge of isro on the phone & tell him to recruit desolator. We might just get some progress then....

lol, I don't speak korean. Also, I don't program in C++. Nobody younger than 25 with a brain does. It's old and slow and a lot of stuff is glitchy and doesn't work the way you expect. That's why it takes them forever to make game alterations and why it crashed so much

Make a online game and you see if it is easy and only to throw some new files out on the server, and test them.
So after you can tell the true ...Now is it BLAHBLHA..All off this..B*

Well for an example media.pk2 files from ksro are more than 100mbs heavier than those of isro and some people already said they saw something about euro mobs in the updates, so what you said desolator isn't that far from the truth.

It's probably why he's graduating with degrees in IT and not computer science. It's not that he doesn't want to program, it's because he can't. He proved it himself by saying it's "glitchy and doesn't work the way you expect." Only the developer makes shitty software, not the language.

I nearly started crying from laughter when he made that statement about C++.

And like everyone else has been saying, a back-up is just a back-up. Nothing more, nothing less.

Getting a degree in IT and boasting about it is like telling all your friends about the cool gift you found in the wheeties box this morning... it's retarded.

Yet this guy got 2 lol

Well besides that honestly these data backups are a set order for the Gm to carry out as was said, funny thing is that it takes relatively no work at all for the GM's just run a few scripts then sit back and read the flames on srf.

:banghead: I don't want an update!

getting back to Systems Analysis, implementation and testing are both in the same step actually. You put the PK2 injector/modifier on the server, test to see if it downloads, then test to see if SRO can still connect and run with the new update. If they didn't catch something that caused nobody to be able to connect the next day because they didn't actually test the update from a client's perspective, the south koreans would riot and burn down their HQ lol. I might even fly over and help :P
and omfg BlackFox, shut up. how did U get so many posts without getting banned when you're that much of a dick? I've been fully trained in Redhat and Windows webservers, most DBMSs, the internet in general, PC programming, the SDLC and project management, Web Programming, and like 10 other areas I'm too lazy to list or explain.
By the way, since nobody who commented about C++ knows what they're talking about....floating point values always come out of memory slightly incorrect, it can't by default handle strings (more than one character in a row!), GUIs, or printing. I can print a file with one line in VB and it takes about a page to make sure it prints in C++. I can screenshot the screen and send it to a movie file with a tiny sub in VB and it would take like miles of code in C++. There's like 1000 more datatypes and way more objects...in fact, C++ alone can't handle objects veyr well. It's a retarded, slow, crappy language that just won't die. Did you know that almost all large companies still use AS400's for their entire infrastructure. Those are those huge computers with no mouse and a black screen with green text that haven't changed much since the 1980's. I can't stand those either. RPG is a joke! So yeah, companies that still use C++ are stuck in the stone age. C# is okay cuz it's like C++ but without all the crap that always goes wrong. But on average, companies that make apps with VB get them done about 27x faster. Like I said, you have to be an old moron who won't update to still use it.

The only good "point" he makes is that development time for VB is faster. Everything else is ignorance and idiocy.

VB is faster then C++? Thanks for the laugh.

edit: It might sound like I'm bashing VB but I'm definitely not. VB definitely has its uses. But if you want to write programs with pretty GUIs that can be thrown together overnight, then pick VB.

If you want flexibility, use another language.

(For your information, I'll be doing C# and VBscript work this fall for a company. Last summer for my internship, I coded purely in C)

I can print a file using C++ with one line: ShellExecute(NULL, "print", "filename.ext", NULL, NULL, 0);
