RUNNING SRO UNDER UBUNTU
There are some versions of linux that will make older, slower machines run pretty decently. I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head though. I had a version running on a Windows 98 Vintage laptop. Worked pretty darned good too.
As xMoDx said, a newer PC is much better for gaming, especially the newer stuff. Of course, an older PC will run older games, so there ya go. I had a buddy that turned an old PII into an SNES emulator and it was pretty cool.

And no, if you knew anything about linux, you would know that all windows files don't work on linux.
Sorry, that's incorrect. There are plenty of windows files that will work under Linux. It just depends on how you run them. Data files, like MS Word documents or images will work just fine in Linux. Executables won't work natively, but you can run a LOT of Windows software in Linux under Wine. Even Internet Explorer can be installed via Wine in Linux, it will just run SLOW.
I've never tried running SRO in Linux, but I'm sure there's a way to do it through Wine or something similar.
As for your question before about running SRO on a server, the original poster never suggested he was running a server. Just said he got the "server is undergoing maintenance...." message that you get when SRO is in an inspection period, or when your network is not properly configured. Linux is not just a server OS.
Did i say "NO files work"
I just said NOT all.
And I give him credit for trying to use something better.

^Thanks 0l3n!
Gone. Never really gone, but never really here.

Well, in my defense, you didn't actually say "NOT". I replied above before reading the rest of the thread where this was corrected I believe.

I just misread what you posted. Sorry about that.

Linux has come a very long way. The first version I used was RedHat 5.5 or something like that. I've managed to make a few converts along the way, but most people want some Windows App that can't run through Wine.
I have to say that I am fairly happy with the way that the game ran and played under Ubuntu. I played for about 2 hours last night, making sure that all things worked properly.
ONe thing that helped dramatically was finding an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that contained more detailed info about my monitor. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 171v. Once I copied and pasted the info into my config the game played much more like it does on Windows. Previously I could only play in 1024x768. Once I changed the file, the game would start in 1024x768 and the screen would resize the way it was supposed to and I could change the resolution in the game to 1280x1024. For some odd reason my settings don't stick and I have to fix them each time I play. No biggie.
The text problem is not been resolved. I still cannot see most peoples names or guilds.

If I had more time, I'd love to load up Gentoo on my system at home and get SRO working on that. I've been doing a lot of Linux security testing lately and it's been getting me to want to try Linux at home again.

I know the feeling. I used to mess around with cvs releases of KDE and explore all of the latest apps, manually rewriting code to make things work or change features and whatnot, but I just don't have the time anymore now that I work in computers all day. I wish I had a job doing more Linux and less Oracle. The last Slackware update I just did the upgradepkg and that was all, no custom patched kernels or anything. I want to switch to Kubuntu for the ease in updating and installing now but I haven't found Ardour and Jack packages for it, and after the time I spent setting that up in Slack I don't want to repeat it all again. I just want to reboot to Slack, record some music, and that is all. I don't have time to fiddle with it anymore.

I used Gentoo for about a year and half. I was able to run alot of games on a PIII 800 with 512MB of RAM. Most of them were free games like ET and Americas Army. The best thing about Gentoo was being able to strip all the crap from the OS that the machine didn't need. I broke many a Gentoo install by hacking it apart, but I learned! Gentoo is awesome. I am really diggin' Ubuntu.
We need an OT thread for succesful SRO Linux installs.

SRO Ubuntu
Well I managed to break my Ubuntu SRO install. I thought you all might find this interesting.
I decided to install some Eyecandy. After doing so, I decided to fire up SRO and play a bit.
I kept getting an error that says "BSObj Plugin" followed by an error message. Nothing I did would make the message go away, so I decided to uninstall the eyecandy. Doing this uninstalled most of my xserver. So I just decided to reinstall Ubuntu. Keep it nice and clean.
This time around I got Wine 0.9.35, so I will see if there are any changes compared to Wine 0.9.34.

Well Ubuntu 7.04 is pretty popular. All of the mirrors are dragging. I didn't try looking for a Bittorrent for 7.04. I will wait a bit.
My Dapper is built with the latest NVIDIA driver that comes with Dapper. I am going to install the 9755 driver and see what kind of performance changes it brings.
Nvidia cards may have an edge over ATI cards when it comes to running SRO. Another good tip is to try to find a good working xorg.conf file that has your monitor listed. Alternatively, if you know what your monitor can do, there is a utility that will generate a custom modline that you can insert into the xorg.conf file.
Once I did this, the overall performance and resolution were greatly improved.

Man, I haven't looked at ReactOS in years, last time I tried it, it was just a bare boot floppy, that wouldn't run on my laptop. Guess it has come along, although I don't entirely understand why you would want to target something that is a movable target, who's API you really don't actually have access to (ask the Samba guys what it is like trying to replicate something by Microsoft, MS intentionally changed things to make samba break). With Vista, the gap is going to grow bigger and bigger until it is likely new apps won't run. I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to do something to break compatibility completely if that project ever gets more steam.
I wasn't able to get SRO to run on ReactOS.
The main reason: I couldn't get ReactOS to run. I had no luck with either the LiveCD or the regular install CD.
I will try again later.

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn
Well I've downloaded and installed Ubuntu 7.04.
Here is what I am using:
I have an old Sony Vaio mobo that I got from the trash. It has a 2.0 Ghz Pentium processor and I have 1024 MB RAM. The memory is Crucial PC2100. I am running an eVGA Nvidia 6200 LE video card.
I have installed Ubuntu 7.04, the nvidia-glx-new, Envy to install the 9755 nvidia driver, and wine 0.9.35. I have also edited my /etc/X11/xorg.conf with a custom modline and better descriptions for my Samsung SyncMaster 171 monitor.
I have installed the game in Wine and it is currently updating.
I will let you know shortly how it works.
So far so good. Most things are working very well. Sadly, the text bug is still there. Nearly every name and guild/union emblems is either a white box or a faint black box where the name should be. I am able to run the game in 1280x1024 and it looks much better compared to 6.06, nvidia-glx, and the nvidia driver.
It played well for about an hour and a half then got really laggy. Hard to say if it is the game server or something with the computer.

There is missing letters because Ubuntu/Wine doesn't have those fonts that SRO is currently using. I was thinking of extracting the fonts from the Media.pk2 because last time I was PK2 editing, I found some fonts somewhere. Theres white boxes probably because they're being uploaded to your computer or something, or Ubuntu doesn't read them.
SRO has graphical errors because to run SRO "PERFECTLY", you need Direct X, and what Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are running at OpenGL, I think.
I'm a Linux noob too but I think I'm right, and OH, Microsoft lost a Windows user.

holy crap, how do you guys get it working?
I've made sro install, update, and patch itself. Gameguard apparently words, and i see the SRO splash screen (it's a bit garbled tho). On my windows computer, sro would then resize the screen and start the intro animation with along with a cursor change. When the screen resizes in ubuntu, I see a black background with the changed cursor in it for about 2 seconds, then the whole thing disappears and I'm back on my desktop. =/
Is it because i'm using an integrated intel GPU? it runs beryl nicely tho.

I bet beryl is your problem. I've read that beryl does not play nicely with WoW and other games. In fact, I couldnt get silkroad to work AFTER i installed EyeCandy. I had to dump the whole build and start from scratch.
I would like to know more about the fonts and pk2 stuff. Can someone elaborate?

Are you just testing it on VMWare? Why not run it through Wine?
I have a 2 Gig processor, 1 Gig of RAM, and an Nvidia 6200LE video card. The game runs perfectly except for the text/guild/union emblem issue.
The core fonts package had no effect.
PingPongBoss, any luck?

You have to use virtual desktop or it will crash randomly and you also have to set it to Windows 98.
I imagine to get it working, but theres a more few problems. My armor is shiny as hell in-game, maybe due to the fact that it's not using Direct-X to render the game, and most skills like imbues, buffs, & nukes don't show when you attack but I acually got the guild names and other users names to work. I was going to take a SS, but for some reason, my Wine is considered as a "broken" pakage" after I rebooted it.
