purpose of diclosing ban list of aege and xian?

Post by vanom »

i don't really get, why JM is disclosing the ban list of aege and xian. the bots of all other servers will get warned in this way, so they can stop botting now. they will just wait a few days and start to bot again. i'm wondering why JM has not released the ban list of all servers at the same time.

The lists have already been put together...

Bot User List and Punishment Notice 03/27

Date : 3/27/2007
inquiry : 10817

Hello. This is Silkroad Online.

We apologize to our users for the delay in posting our latest massive bot list. The process of arranging the list has taken more time than we had expected. However, we are now done sorting the list, and the bot list will be posted more often.

The bot list of Xian & Aege has been posted, and can be found under User violation/Bug Abusers in our Forum section. Bot list of other servers will be coming soon.

Our war with the bots continues...

So they already banned the botters on each server? Then why are the other lists taking so long?

Its not like they start checking the other servers for bots now. I think thats already been done, they just need to gather the information and put together a list. I thinks this process has been going on for a while.

hmm I think that it's kind of funny how people get banned a few days after the exp compensation event I'm sure the GM's were monitoring the event and using it as a way of fishing out botters.

Well if that's the case, that can be taken care of with a simple script. Pick your favorite programming language, drop the unorganized bot list into it, and sort. :D

I'm sure JM's new bot banning process is an ongoing thing. They may be banning bots daily, but waiting a certain time to collect a good size list before reporting the list to the public through their forums. Waiting a few days won't help the botters. They'll get hit soon.

If I read the notice correctly, the entire bot list (of all servers) is completed. However, only Xian and Aege have been alphabetized and ready for posting on the official forums. I take that to mean that bots have been banned on other servers already, but the lists have not been prepared for posting, yet.

Depends on the operating system that the Silkroad game servers are running on. Of course, the silkroad client only supports Windows operating systems, but what do the servers run? Theoretically they could be Linux servers. In that case, there might not even be a GUI on the servers (technically from a security standpoint there SHOULDN'T be a GUI on a server...)

I have no idea what OS the gaming industry typically uses for their servers.

There are 17th server, right?

So, how much time do you need to arrange the lists from A - Z all in alphabetical order and also there are ~200 accounts per server.
Stopped playing SRO a long time ago; still pr0.

Sorting from the command line is incredibly easy in linux. I took it to mean they had to sort through the list, banned the players, and are preparing to ban on the other servers now, but they already have the list to ban. Just the way I read it.

Not that hard at all.

maybe they need time to get approval from big bosses in korea, big bosses check if botter buy silk, how many (good business or bad), if bad, ban, if not, well, to be discussed later...

still, nice one JM for the ban list though

keep in mind they posted those at 6:22 pm in Korea. They still had to finish server updates. Most of the people there are probabaly just working stiffs and don't make decisions. Decision makers go home before 6 pm. It's almost 7 am ther now, I'd expect the rest of the lists in a few hours once they get back to work.

my 2 cents.

sort -i list in linux/unix. I don't do much from the cmd line in 2k3 so I am unfamiliar with that process, if I'm making a script in 2k3/2k I either install and use perl or write it up in vbs. Is there a native sort command in Windows? I only find the sort command from my cygwin installation.

VB FTL.

in cmd, type sort
then type everything
then press ctrl-c to break.

AHHHHHH. I thought it was using my cygwin sort, but which sort shows it is using it from system32. Good call, I was not aware of this command. I've been working with mostly unix servers for the last 8 years, and only grudgingly admin the windows boxes. Thx for the tip.

Their website is on a Windows box running Microsoft IIS 6.0 server using mostly asp scripting. Therefore it can very easily be hacked.

Their game servers are hosted on Win2k3 servers. And when you log into the game, the game servers authenticates your login information with the web server, which is exposed to the open internet. Not very smart security implementation, thus why their security are poor. I can post a lot more about their network and security but don't think that would be a good idea.

Yeah probably not a good idea. Part of me would love to do a penetration test on their entire network during a "server inspection" and work with them to fix up anything found. It would sure beat writing security plans, contingency plans, and the like...

I do agree if the game servers are authenticating users against a public web server, that's a bad idea. I'm not so sure Joymax would ever go for a penetration test, but maybe at least a vulnerability scan. It would certainly have to be from a reputable company with prior experience in the field, such as the company I work for. :)
