EDIT2: best i can get is around 70 seconds. i used to be able to get 2 mins when i was younger, and RuYi claims to get 4 mins! but i dont believe her (dont tell her )

I count from when I already am starting to hold it in until I let out even a little bit of air. But I guess this is incorrect since you can let out air underwater you just can't breathe in...

Breaking 2 min isn't that hard. Hyperventilate a little before you take that deep breath, so most of the old carbondioxid gets out. A warning though for doing that when holding your breath under water. Since your breathing reflex might not be triggered before it is too late, you can pass out. Water + being unconcious = you start to breath water. :/
You cant die from doing this, unless its near/in water.

do you need to prove it yourself to win the bet? special ops can hold their breathe for around 7min (got that from a documentary) by readjusting their heart beat rate but you are not special ops, are you?
without readjusting your heartbeats, your brain cells will start to die around 3min without fresh oxygen, but you are gonna pass out before then
