ALPS Serious SCAM... This is good.

Post by shoto »

ok so a preface.... I log in this morning and i see that i just recieved a message from an "Alps" moderator. I read it and it says that it is just a random safety check. I reply and the second message i receive, as the scammer realizes that i am receptive, makes it clear that something is fishy.

Image

Ok at this point I was like a little confused...Why is a mod contacting insignificant me?? My worries were soon put to rest as it was made clear that this guy was desperate.

Image
to this i replied with a laugh, and mocked him. Thinking that he hadn't been defeated he tried again.

Image
I WAS SHACKING IN MY BONEZZZZZ. Again i mocked him and then told him the Sro policy of not giving out info. I thought if he couldn't be convinced by being ridiculed maybe he would listen to reason.

Image
And so he did and victory was mine!!

Now there were a few other messages recieved in between, but that was when i was like..."I'm confused, your english is terrible, and what do you actually want?"
Please people on ALPS don't fall for this...otherwise i will be really really sad

Yep, you are correct.

Normally passwords are saved in a one way hash format. That way passwords can not be deduced from a password database either. To make it harder to brute force them, you usually also apply a salt to ensure that the one-way hash is unique, even for people with the same password. Common format now days are MD5, SHA-1 or higher SHA-algorithms. Not that both MD5 and SHA-1 has been found to be vulnerable for collision attacks. This is however not a worry for passwords, but for digital signing of documents.

It is unlikely that JM have the password in a format which is usuable. However, there is never any reason why they would ever need your password. Anything you need your password for, they could most likely accomplish with an administrator login instead and thus, it is a scam.

There you go, that's what i was really worried about; that he was working across servers scamming people...the funny thing is how he tries to assure me that he is a mod, even though he obviously can't ban me. It's the arrogance that really gets me.

I wish there was a way to get people banned. I mean this guy is seriously hurting the game. I can see if you are new to the game you could fall for something like this. Like a newb or a younger kid hearing that his account could be banned may just hand over info without thinking twice....Although it would cut the amount of stupid people in game. haha j/k

He spelled verification wrong. First mistake.

2nd: Gm's have a [GM] before or after their names.

3rd: You will never have to verify your password, since you do it once you log in.

4th: This was fun!
