Reputation system

Post by Stallowned »

Have any of you been on a forum with a rep system? Basically everyone starts out with the same amount of points- 0. When someone posts if you think it was a good post you can give the person a positive rep, and if you really dislike teh post you can give them a negative rep. The more reps you have, the more rep power you have which means when you give someone a rep it goes up or down more.

Anyway I'm not sure if it could be implemented on this kind of forum, but it would be pretty cool if it was.

It can, and I've seen it before on other phpBB forums.

It's a waste of time, in my opinion. People give rep points for about anything but get really pissed when someone takes one away, despite the fact that they mean absolutely nothing. They are a popularity contest.

you got something against popularity contests? >.> <.<

but it's true. certain people will rack up rep points, and others may not, even if they contribute just as much. and then some people will lose them quicker than hell, just because one person may be holding a grudge for something.

if someone with a high rep dislikes you, it'd make it even worse, since their 'opinion' would count for more. so even if just one high-rep person hated your guts, they could lower your rep every time you posted.

and of course the opposite is true too.......

We don't need a mod to indicate who has a good reputation on this board. This is a basic social skill that everyone over the age of 3 should be able to handle without the help of a computer program.

This forum would be better without rep points, because then some people will expect them when they help others, will get angry when they don't get them, and some of the newer members will get angry for getting a "-rep" so will just return the favor. It just makes the forum more hostile.

Features like rep and birthdays - you gotta understand how PHPBB gets those.

They are mods made by end users, not PHPBB.

They are often very complicated, and need 20 files edited.

They are guarunteed to have *some* kinds of bugs and errors.

Since they are end user made, you rarely get good support for mods.

Then, the user quits and the mod is abandoned, and never updated.

THEN

When I go to update our PHPBB version to keep up to date on features and security, THEN ENTIRE MOD IS LOST.

Then when you go BACK to the mod creator, he hasn't made a new one for the new version, or doesnt have time.

This is why I dont want to install mods. :D :D

I find it more like a Karma system, but Ryoko is right, It will give you errors and may even crash teh board at times. But I personally dont think that kind of thing is needed.

The rep thing is included in VB boards tho. But you need to pay to have VBulliten board.

I took a long break. 4 months of jSRO, 2 months of no SRO.

I level up slow because either..

A) I decide to have fun instead of grinding
B) I am SP Farming
C) I keep on getting killed

i put it there because the person above my post was saying if we had this type of what ever we could have the rep system so i just though i would point it out to him that it was already a no to this suggestion
