Hmmm Is this true...clarification plz
Skimming around in SRF when all of a sudden I come down to reply. I forget where it was and all...but
It said "When you trade with somebody your making a direct connection leaving open to getting hacked."
Is this true? A direct connection?

Probably not. At least i cant see a reason for it. Even if it is, that doesnt mean your "open" to be hacked. There can be potential security problems though.

whether or not it's true is irrelevant. you can protect yourself by a) NEVER accepting a party invitation from anyone, even someone you know, and b) NEVER conducting business through a trade window, always using stalls. even if it's someone you know, it can be a spoofed account using the "i" and "l" trick or something similar, and you can get yourself scammed at the very least or hacked if these rumors are true. i have party invitations and trades set to auto deny. safest bet.

Thx IceCrash for my awesome sig :)

I don't think this is true. Most people are behind routers today, you can't open direct connection to someone who's behind a router, unless there's a forwarded port, and SRO doesn't require that.
Also, someone can do some packet sniffing and see what happens when you try to do trade. But I'm pretty sure it's not a direct connection.

Upnp enabled routers, most that you can buy, allow ports to be opened when software sends the command, like games or torrent clients.
Close all apps but sro, open a trade, netstat -an or use ethereal and look. It is Wednesday and wow is online so I don't have time.

I have UPnP disabled, and my Linux router doesn't support it anyway for now. Many people have applied for trade with me and succeeded, and I initiated it with many people and succeeded, since april. What I'm saying is, if it was a direct connection, then people behind non UPnP routers would not be able to trade with each other. Anyway, everything goes through the server, I don't see why trade is an exception.

its not true people. You and everyone else is connected to a server. every interaction you do with a player is done in and via that server. your items and your account stuff. are not stored in your pc for someone to direct connect to it and steal it. All your account stuff are stored in the sro servers.
all those people who have gotten hacked, have gotten hacked because they gave their account info out.
In general, you can not get hacked in server games. unless they are privatly owned as is the case with some fps games where everyone can have their own server and they log your ip when you connect to their server.
But when you connect to sro, only sro servers know your ip. no players know your ip.
