INDIANAPOLIS — School leaders are getting ready for a big change in school food service.
The USDA’s Smart Snacks in School rules go into effect July 1, 2014. In short, all “junk food” in vending machines, a la carte lunch, student stores and fundraisers such as bake sales will be banned July 1.
“I think that’s great!” said Betsy Hunsucker, a Brownsburg mother. “I think kids would love fruits and vegetables.” Fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein-rich foods and whole grain-rich foods are allowed.
Water, milk and 100 percent fruit and vegetable juice is permitted. High school students can have caffeine and low-calorie carbonated drinks.
There are also rules when it comes to nutritional values like calories, sodium, sugar and fat.
“I’m afraid that parents have spoiled their children so much with the choices that they allow them to make at home that the kids will turn up their noses to the nutrition,” said Hunsucker.
Some schools, like Brownsburg, have already started. They have been compliant with grades K-5 since Christmas break, and have been slowly introducing older students to items like baked chips.
Katie Sherven, the director of food services for Brownsburg Schools, says they’re really excited about their plans to put a “garden bar” in all of their schools next year.

Sounds good as long as they can afford it.

Should just make it a crime to have obese children lol. Perhaps if the consequences weren't confined to the child, the parents might care more >_>.
If it's against the law to not take care of a kid properly in some ways, why is letting them eat unhealthy stuff to a point where they put their health at risk any different.
I just don't like the logic behind this type of thing. It's like, because 1 kid blows his hand off with fireworks, everyone has to suffer when they ban them.

Well, they can still bring their own "unhealthy" food from home. Schools should consider what they choose to sell in their "stores", though, which is why I think this law is a fine idea.

Every school needs to have a coffee vending machine though.

I'll just bring my cans of Coke and Twinkies from home and sell them for a 50% profit. Just like prohibition, bitches.

+1
But I think the schools should try and encourage rather than enforce...It may just backfire if not handled properly...

Re: Hello fruits and vegetables! “Junk food” banned..
This happened in my school when I was in year 9/10 (about 9 years ago now). Honestly it wasn't as big of a deal as everyone made it out to be, you couldn't buy candy any more or *most* soft drinks but there were still a lot of good lunch options at our school (chicken schnitzel sandwiches, hell you still even get pies). Obviously America is much different to Australia, though and I'm sure culturally it's a much bigger deal for America. Overall a good program that should have been done a long time ago.
Re: Hello fruits and vegetables! “Junk food” banned..
We weren't able to buy soft drinks at school, but cookies and candy was still available. We also had like 2 or 3 shops nearby so between lessons we could buy anything. Also a place to buy burgers was near. But better fast food restaurants were a bit further so we used to skip a class to go to these places. Now in another school (high school) the situation is more or less the same.
