Biotechnology could let us extend convicts' lives 'indefinitely'
Sentencing a criminal to 1,000 years in an artificial hell may one day become a reality. At least, that is the claim of scientists at Oxford University who have been exploring controversial technologies that could extend human life. They say billions are being invested in techniques that could mean the cruellest criminals will be kept alive indefinitely in condition befitting their crime.
According to their research, prison firms could also develop drugs that make time pass slowly, making an inmate’s sentence feel like an eternity. Last year, a team of scientists led by Rebecca Roache began exploring technologies that could keep prisoners in an artificial hell.
This idea seems to be sadistic and have a retarded focus....why extend the lives of criminals and not the general public... What criminal is going to want to suffer for that long... They'd rather kill themselves...

So lets spend money on making criminals last longer and to have money spent on taking care of them for a lot longer/eternity?
I think if we really wanted to punish them, simply ending their life or a little while of torture would do the trick. Certainly not 1000 years of it. Don't think that would help anyone in anyway really anyway. I mean aside from making ourselves feel a bit better from bringing pain to them, whats the point? Lets leave the punishment up to the victim :3.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken.
Why not siphon some of that money towards other research that would be beneficial for everybody? Someone losing their freedom for life is punishment enough.
Spoiler!

Used to be that that people seeked immortality for themselves, now it seems all they want it for is the criminals. The aim here is completely off. This is such a stupid and retarded idea. I wouldn't want this kind of punishment to anyone. You also have to think about the fact that innocent people can get such a punishment too. Like there was some kid put into jail (solitary confinement) who just said some bad words on the net and similar cases. This would be just a huge step back for the society.

I wanna live for 1,000 years -.-.
Agreed, criminals incarcerated have free cable, consoles and access to free education while some people in life don't even have a home.
