What do you do in this situation

Post by Aventus »

A family member of mine, who is a pretty big scumbag, acquired my SSN (social security number)after we had a falling out. He recently used it to turn the heat back on in the apartment we lived in ( after he threw me out ). My concern is he now basically has my identity and can open credit cards and utilities and such. If you were in this situation what would you do (Given this is a member of my immediate family).

If they would actually start using any of it, report it to authorities. Or mention it to them "kindly" if they threatened they'd go and do that..

Report to the police. He should be the one considering stealing a family member's identity, not you.

I don't know the entire situation, obviously, but you should tell him not to do anything like that again or you will get the cops on him.
If you want to, you can get him arrested now, or wait until he does something worse.
If he is a scumbag, I would just get the cops on him now.

Well, you might need to... notify the proper authorities and
credit reporting agencies immediately.

He may be a scumbag but, he's still family just talk to him and give him a warning. The way I see it, seems like you're not good at confrontation.

How does someone do so much with just your SSN? It just shows your name and SSN # on it right? To sign up for most stuff, don't you need a piece of ID with your picture on it?

Nope, not always! Well, that's why you need to keep your credit card
checking account, or Social Security numbers to yourself.!

Over the phone the only ID they require to make changes to the account are the credit card number or the SSN on the account.

family is still family man, what's worse is that he's immediate family, you can't just be responsible making a member of your family go to jail, where the issue can be resolved by simple talk over or confrontation, or rather have family intervention to make him stop abusing you.

I don't really know much about western culture, but from where I came from(Asia) We value our family more than anything.

I agree but... That may never get resolved!
So, you would Just accept, if someone in your family make your life a living hell?
