Post by HyperBunny »

Name: Proteus
Website: http://www.visitproteus.com/
Platform: PC/Single Player
Cost: P2P or I can upload it by request via pm
Status: Available

Overview: "A game of audio-visual exploration and discovery by Ed Key and David Kanaga"

Graphics: The graphics are pixels, all pixels. It looks this way intentionally.

Gameplay: The gameplay is simply exploration, while going to different objects or creatures music and sounds will play. Seasons change, weather changes, wind blows, strange creatures appear. chasing a frog creates a tune, everything is meant to be relaxing and music based.

Sound: The sounds and music are calm and soothing.

Controls: a, d, w, s.

Overall: If you like exploration, soothing sounds and music, you would probably enjoy this. It's simple yet beautiful.

Not sure if sarcasm, but most likely.

Not sarcasm, I thought it was amusing. I actually own this game on Steam but have never played it. Got it as part of a Humble Bundle I believe.

I can appreciate what they're trying to do (or have done) by making this game but no thanks...I don't find it appealing at all....

Only recently got a steam account myself when i started to play Dota 2. Mostly console player really. Pc is pretty much mmos.

Anyway, I do find Proteus to be quite peaceful, yet eerie lol.

I can see this game have a lot of applications with the oculus rift...
from medical applications, to general relaxation, to people tripping balls while drugged...

It looks like an interesting experience once in a while, but it doesn't actually feel like a game and therefore it lacks the necessary factor to make you actually want to boot it up.
If it could somehow generate interesting stories along with it's terrain, that could give the player a goal, it would probably be many times more interesting. The video said it was an Alpha. I'm not sure how recent that is, but if the game isn't complete yet then I can at least see potential in it to be something nice. Pure environmental generation and only exploration however just won't cut it, that's too bare-bone, at least for me.

Im hoping it could be something like Myst. A showcase of graphics, a peaceful adventure but with a storyline to pull you in and puzzles to keep you busy.
For this game they could ditch the puzzle element, but include the story generation as part of the exploration element. At least, I think that would be awesome...

Sorry. I've been on an Indie splurge lately. I guess I figured some others liked this kinda thing. I had other Indie game reviews but I don't think I'll post them.

Aww, don't do that. It's totally fine :D
We're just posting our uninformed observations. Tbh the game has caught my eye and I'd be willing to try it out at the right time. And it really seems interesting if it could ever work with the oculus rift...

I'm kinda in the mood for these kinds of peaceful games atm.
I bought the Sid Meier humble bundle and I've been playing the crap out of Railroads even though it's buggy as hell... :D

Anyway, don't cut the reviews, we enjoy them a lot even if the games aren't for us... at least I do.
Disliking something doesn't mean you can't appreciate it after all.
