Brazil doesn't have capital punishment. As for the people who killed the referee, their sentences will never be as high as the punishment the referee would have gotten if he was still alive. So it will still save Brail tax dollars.

just because people have different attitudes to crimes doesnt mean its more acceptable or more encouraging... its just the people reacting like that are assholes in the first place. when you go to a baseball game in america, people happily sit next to each other, even rivals and opposition sit next to each other! in a soccer game in the UK, home and away fans are separated by two lines of police officers and about 10 rows of seats!
a player from san fran went to see a giants vs dodgers game and some dodgers fan beat him up so bad he is now physically and mentally disabled. Most people in san fran know of this incident as it was big news at the time and he regularly gets posted by the giants team at games.
In the UK, a friend of mine and dutchy's went to a Scottish football match and got his legs crushed by some kids using hammers and im not sure how he is doing but last i heard, they were doubtful he would walk. NO NEWS COVERAGE AT ALL. for some reason this is common enough not to warrant news yet its absolutely not acceptable.
