Skype IM's not sending

So for years now I've been having this issue with skype where the IMs I send are just not getting sent. There's an infinite loopy thing at the side of the post. Both of us are online, but it's not sending.
Ever since the MSN people had to switch over to Skype I think I've been getting it more often, and I'm starting to get kinda pissed. I used to be able to solve the problem by sending a file along with my messages. That seemed to give it a wake-up slap and the after 5-6 seconds all the messages would get sent, but even that trick doesn't seem to cut it anymore. Which makes me think it might be some weird server issue, that can be triggered by sending some 'higher priority' information (a file), but that also just seems rather strange and bullshitty... I'm slowly getting kind of angry with this thing, it's a pain in the ass. Sometimes it takes HOURS until the message is sent.

has anyone here ever had similar issues? how did you fix it if at all?

That's SMS, but he meant instant message.

Haven't had such problems thus far.

I have had that problem also a few times:

And it's either a problem with skype-servers
or with the person hosting the conversation

yeah but... for years?
I've been having this a LONG time...

Could it be something with my firewall? But what could be causing it to act that way only occasionally? Half the time my skype works normally, and at other moments it delays it between minutes and hours...
