Beware of certain Prophecy'sReports from the Russian region of the Ural Mountains suggest that a meteor may have exploded 10,000 meters above the ground this morning. YouTube videos show loud blasts and bright objects falling from the sky, and an emergency official told Reuters that "It was definitely not a plane. We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far." The incident occurred in Chelyabinsk, about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow.
"Preliminary indications are that it was a meteorite rain," said an emergency official speaking to RIA-Novosti. "We have information about a blast at 10,000-meter (32,800-foot) altitude. It is being verified." There are conflicting reports on what happened: an emergency ministry spokeswoman told the Associated Press that there was a meteor shower, but another account given to Interfax reported a single meteorite. Citing a Russian Interior Ministry spokesperson, the AP says that over 500 people have been injured, many by broken glass.

For some reason, I really dislike the sound of Russian and Chinese language.

I think it depends heavily on the dialect.
the official Russian you hear on the news sounds fine I think, but a lot of people use a sort of mixed Russian that comes from old villages. to the untrained ear it can almost sound arabic :S
At least that's how it is in Bulgarian, I assume the 2 languages don't differ too much.

There's a ton of Russians here and we also learn Russian in school. I would actually be able to speak Russian properly if I wanted to learn it. Russians living in Estonia apparently speak a lot differently than the ones in Russia, but I can't hear the difference.

I am surprised there wasn't any early warning system to detect and track it and possibly intercept it. What if it was a nuclear missile? Is this how vulnerable these nations are?

how do you propose you detect it? its moving at 30m/s from an unknown location (a missile would come from earth or from a known military satellite) its probably dark in color because of its composition and there is a LOT of similar sized objects in our solar system.
another reason we may not care about it is because most meteorites the same size as this will break up in the earths atmosphere before pelting the earth with small fragments rather than a giant lump, especially those that have been pulled towards earth by earths gravity. The damage done by this meteor was not a large deal... it was small compared to the real threat of meteor collisions.

A missile is a lot smaller and more devastating yet it can be detected, tracked and intercepted. And missiles are suppose to come from any direction (same for a meteor)....The mere fact that some object whether you know what it is or not is streaking towards your country should warrant a response....And what does the color of the meteor has to do with tracking it? You think agencies track these things with their eyes??....Telling yourself that it will break up in the earth's atmosphere and we can leave it alone because of that is a dumb comment in light of the many people now injured...

dont tell that to me... tell that to the people that do something about it.
the fact is, most meteors break up in the atmosphere. the fact is that governments dont pay attention to those that are not of a certain size.
also they tract meteors with telescopes... what do u think they use?!?! theres no radar or light source coming from them, they dont necessarily radiate anything to detect them... how do u want to see them????
a missile comes from the ground or from a place that others in the world know about. people can monitor the world much easier then monitor space. its not that there is a better place to look for missiles then earth...
we can only hope that they get intercepted... otherwise we wont live to tell the tale.

Yes, they track them using telescopes, but they're not watching with their eyes 24/7. And every object in univers emits light, because there is no 100% black body in universe. That's probably how they keep track of objects near us.

You obviously don't understand how radar works in its basic form....The object being detected don't need to emit light..all it needs is to be able have radio waves bounce off it and back to a radar station... If they are already able to detect and track other meteors that are so far away it shouldn't be too hard to detect and track one that was so close....
You also don't understand (or choosing not to think about it) that a missile can be (and are at times) fired in one direction but come at it's target from a totally different direction (due to its long range capabilities) in a effort to confuse/hide its true point of origin...

Re: Meteor falls in Russia
It's harder to track a meteor if you have no idea it exists. Even if we did have radar, you would have only mere minutes at most to know its coming. From what I heard, we know only a very small percentage of the meteors that exist in our cosmic neighborhood. Our telescopes can't watch the entire sky at all times,we don't have enough telescopes for that.

The government probably just didn't care as it wasn't coming in their direction.

Re: Meteor falls in Russia
NASA estimated the meteor was only about the size of a bus and weighed an estimated 7,000 tons, it exploded with the force of 20 atomic bombs.
Luckily, "the atmosphere absorbed the vast majority of that energy," said Amy Mainzer, a scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Please...you're giving me a headache....We can track the movements of meteors that are weeks/months away from reaching our planet....
