She was valuable to the enemy.

Being terribly outnumbered, Kakashi had to end her life in order to keep her out of the hands of their enemies.

This can be understood when you see the enemy ninjas talking about retrieving her corpse (just before being slaughtered by Obito).

All other answers are wrong. Only a complete idiot would draw the conclusion that Rin was a traitor/being controlled or that it was part of an Anbu test. -_-

Since we're all making predictions here, I'd say Naruto dies together with Sasuke at the end right after being "Hokage" then someone else takes over as Hokage -- probably Shikamaru then Konohamaru down the line.

I kind of cringed at the power of love part but after further explanations it doesn't sound too cheesy. Pretty much the sharingan is fueled by emotions.
