Headphones

Post by TheDrop »

hey
I got some money atm so I'm looking to buy some decent headphones. Most of mine have been ~10$-30$ for this time im looking to spend more.

Up to $200
Mainly listen to hip hop and dubstep (I read that the type of music matters?)
Around ear
some amount of noise canceling? (even if its not marketed as one)

So far I have looked at Bose AE2 (can afford the 300$ pair), but I read that its not very good for hiphop/dubstep music.
http://www.amazon.com/Bose-47684-Bose%C ... s=bose+ae2
I have read around for some other brands like audio-technica and Senhaiser but i do not know any specific models. And I am mainly looking to just listen to music and they seem to be for work purposes..?

Any recommendations? thanks :)

Hm well i have never really thought about cords all that much but i guess wireless would be a plus :)

I found these headphones which everyone seems to be raving for (Audio technica ATH M50)
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT ... ca+ath+m50
Are they good for regular music listening aswell though?

Also, i heard iPod classic has worse sound quality than iPod touch/nano, would that be true? o.O

I'm getting these tomorrow.
No clue about what you should get for listening music though. Just so excited about my headphones I felt compelled to share this in a headphones thread :sohappy:

I'll let you know if they're any good!

^Yeah, alot of people seem to say that which is why i had reservations on buying the Bose A2. I was first interested in Bose after trying out a set of headphones at the Apple Store (epic noise canceling) but those happened to be the 300$ ones, which i am not willing to spend anyways

I have Astro's. They are for gaming but they have a detachable mic so you won't see much of it. The sound is pretty damn good when I used it on my phone to listen to music.

I have a pair of Audio Technica M50's and I gotta say, they're pretty damn amazing. I would definitely recommend them. But if that's not your thing I would suggest brands like AKG, Audio-Technica, Grado, Sennheiser, Shure, Beyerdynamic, Denon and maybe Sony (they make some decent cans too). Avoid Monster and Bose at all cost, terribly over priced and generally bad quality headphones.

Also since you mentioned they're for work purposes, avoid open air headphones (they leak sound out, and let outside sound in. Used for home listening). Another thing to keep in mind is that you want noise isolation over noise cancellation. The difference is that noise isolation just seals in your sound and keeps outside noises out, whereas noise cancellation usually requires some batteries and it basically generates noise to cancel out any outside noise.

I'd make this post longer but I gotta run. Have fun deciding what to get, there are almost endless possibilities!

You had Astro's shipped from their own website? I looked into that at one point and it cost like 200 dollars-ish just to ship them >.<
Bought myself Logitech G35's, gaming headsets- USB, they're Great at the pc.

Have Sennheiser hd228 for normal audio on the go- i've always liked Sennheiser headphones really. HD 598's seem really good for about 200 dollars.

It depends on what kind of style you like as well though ^^

Mostly what this guy said. Bose, monster, and skullcandy are all extremely overpriced brand-names. I recently got the AKG K 172HD's for 100$ on sale (reg like 175) and they are pretty decent. Since you're at such a high price point you may also want to invest in a small amp such as the FiiO E5 or something similar. I'd also avoid "gaming" headsets as they usually skimp out on sound quality..

Also the HD 598s mentioned above are a great buy if you can find them sub $200.

I did have them shipped from their own website. But I used their English site to order. If I had done it through the USA one it would've been a ton more money lol it was still pretty pricy.

I never thought I'd like to go wireless, I thought cord would be better, just not a too long cord, but now the isolation around my cord has broken at the volume control thingie and it does make me feel differently about wireless. My cord isolation is made from a stupid material and it is very stiff in some parts because dirt and stuff has gone into it. -.-

Thanks for the explanation. Actually i meant it for music not work :P

the Sennheiser HD 598s look really nice but the lowest i can find atm is $250 :|. Are the HD228s around ear or on-ears?
Also is this list any good?
http://www.complex.com/tech/2011/08/the ... nder-200#1

I'm mainly looking for one to listen to on the bus and/or at home, maybe try some FL studio (not really <.>)

Looking at more Sennheisser/Grado/Shura/Astro/Ultrasone models atm, thanks for the feedback

One i found
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-239 ... roduct_top
seems to get raving reviews, any experience with these?

My main reservation with many of these headphones is that they seem to be very bulky, maybe mainly for in-home/studio use. I want one for traveling on the bus (closed), car, walking, etc.
I liked the look on the Bose AE2 'cause it was around-ear but still looked light, but seeing as many ppl say its not a very good set i won't bother.
I guess ill have to go for the Seinnheiser HD 229
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/on-ear-hea ... ize_504786
Even though its on-ear, its closed and seems portable
Unless anyone else have suggestions for around-ear, closed, portable designs? :D

I don't see why you need them to be portable. When I go out with my headphones on, that's where they stay, on. Anyway, here are a few guides:
Spoiler!

They're pretty much all saying the same thing, but whatever. They're all good guides to follow.

Ok so I just got my Siberia V2 Headphones. My first impressions aren't that good. They're not as comfortable as I had expected them to be.

Image

The floating headband is connected to the earpieces by two thin iron threads. This is unstable as shit and causes the headband to flip around before getting into position, really annoying.
I thought that with the 'floating headband' I'd get higher comfort as it's always in the perfect size, but the headband is just a small strap of leather and doesn't have much cushioning.
The sound is pretty good though, not too sure about the sound isolation yet. I can hear myself typing atm so it's not perfect (got a very load keyboard though).
Got a lot of 'new' squeaks, when I turn my head around I hear the iron cables through my floating headband make a ton of noise.
All in all I wouldn't really recommend this headset too highly :( Thinking about returning it atm. These squeaks are annoying.

My previous headset (Sennheiser HD 215) is basically in the same price range and is a lot more comfortable and has better isolation.
The Siberia comes with a retractable microphone and a microphone on/off switch, so that's cool. I'm used to table microphones though, not even sure if I'd use it.

If you're not going to be carrying them around, or if you're a regular skype/vent user, I'd recommend microsoft LX-3000. I've been using the them for about 1.5 years now. Very good sound, even for dubstep/rap/whatever. The mic is really good quality and they go for about 60$. Whenever I have them with sound on, I can't really hear anything outside (not even the fire alarm, or my little sister screaming).

I had once headphones that'd vibrate according to whatever you're watching/playing (specially bass)so playing games would reach a few points more in matter of realness.

Have these right now except I got them for 45$ last year. They are amazing. I always get comments from people on how clear my microphone sounds.

Yup, I used to use my laptop built-in microphone to communicate over vent/skype and it wasn't that bad. But seriously, the LX-3000 were really a huge upgrade. As for the price, I live in Canada so computer shit is always bumped up in price here. But even at 60$, it's a good buy.

Well after like 2 months of searching (and mostly going back and forth over the same headphones), i decided to order the Phillips Citiscape Uptown
Image
Went through a lot of headphones, TMA, m50, shure 840 creative aurvana, decided to settle on the citiscapes. Found some good reviews of it on headfi, + it was 84$ on amazon (150$ usually)
I heard the isolation is really good, which is what i really wanted, hopefully the bass is good aswell.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, even though i went commercial rather than audiophile :P

Will post my opinions if anyones interested (after i get em)

Yeah I really liked the look too
I burned em for like 10hours, tbh im disappointed with the bass, and most of my music is hip hop, some dubstep so yeah :(
They isolate very nice and very comfortable though

Not sure if i should get Sony XB600 instead and return these (would amazon still take em back after its been opened?)
